Q: Does anyone have experience taking the prescription medicine Abilify?
Does anyone have experience taking the prescription medicine Abilify? My doctor added this drug to what I am already taking, Remeron (Mirtazipine), and I am wondering what I might expect as far as side effects. I read that one side effect can be uncontrolled facial movements that can become permanent. I began Abilify four days ago, at 1/2 dose, taking it at night.

A: I took it 15mg/day in conjunction with a mood stabilizer because I was manic. It treated the mania within a week and I felt much better. Highly recommend Abilify. It’s a great medication.

Q: Will the medicine ABILIFY interact with Birth Control Pills?
I take birth control pills, and my doctor just prescribed me Abilify, another medication used for depression and such. I asked her if it will interfer or make my Birth Control less effective, but she said she had no idea. I looked up on the label, but i couldnt find it it interefered with it or not. I really dont want to take medicine that will interefer with my birth control. Does anyone know?

A: No, there shouldn’t be an interaction. Abilify works on your central nervous system while oral contraceptives contain hormones. The results of each drug here should not be compromised.

Q: Can medicine like abilify and welbutrin make you dumber?
since they’re supposed to change brain signals to control mood or something

is it possible that they make you dumber?
like a decrease in intellect

or otherwise stunt growth? reproductive growth/height/ w/e

does it matter if it was taken at a pivotal age?
like 11-12-13

A: It is unknown. There is a huge amount of controversy prescribing atypical antipsychotics (like Abilify) to kids and teens. Abilify is used for many reasons like depression, bipolar, and psychosis. Even diagnosing bipolar in kids/teens is controversial.

Drug like Ritalin and Adderall are completely safe, if anything can they help grow the brain. Although long term, high dose abuse can cause brain damage. Stimulants can stunt growth but studies have shown that by adulthood everything will have normalized. But atypicals in particular are a concern because a 15 year old and a 35 year old will respond differently. Atypicals also have several FDA black box warnings (the most severe warning) and the risks and rates of atypicals causing major metabolic problems is concerning. Some atypicals are being considered for depression and anxiety but the risks might out weigh any benefit. I would hope the FDA does not approve them for anxiety.

I don’t think a drug like Abilify should be used in children (or anyone) unless other treatments fail but it is a good first line medication for psychosis. I can also cause weight gain, in some cases huge amounts.

Wellbutrin is safer and does not really have a lot of criticism around it.
Having said all of that I doubt Abilify will actually make people dumb.

Q: Does Abilify is the best and newest medicine to treat Schizophrenia?
I am asking for my mother 80 years old and i want to know is it safe.

A: Abilify is a very new drug used to treat Schizophrenia. How it works for your mom or if it will be the best is a guess. Many of the drugs used to treat mental illness work for some but not others. The best thing to do is keep your doctor informed about what symptoms are changing and are they better or worse.

Q: Abilify. How good is this medicine? For anxiety and psychosis?
Abilify is your experience good or bad with Abilify? Anxiety/psychosis. Any info is great.

A: It made me so sick I could not get up off of the floor. It made me extremely nauseus, my head was spinning, and I couldn’t keep my eyes open. This would set in about twenty minutes after I took it. About ten minutes after I took it, I felt a noticeable upswing in my mood, but it only lasted shortly, and then I felt too sick to stand it. I believe I only took it twice because the side effects were so severe in my case that I could not continue. This is the only mood disorder drug I have taken that had this effect on me. I was told it was an extremely severe reaction, and that most people do not have this.

Q: I take Abilify now my hand shakes on the inside is it because of the medicine?
I take 60 mg and have been for 2 years. Now my hand feels like it is shaking on the inside. Is it the Abilify. I also take Lithium, Welbutrin, and Pristiq. I will be talking to my doctor but I want to know a little before I take to her.

A: i have taken a lot of bipolar meds im not sure which one it could be but after taking abilify i have a small tremor on my left side meaning my hand shakes a little if u do not let them know soon it could be permanent so do talk to ur doctor cause i didnt talk to mine for months n know mine is permanent

Q: would the medicine abilify give me false postive pregnancy test?

A: if you put the pregancy test in apple juice it seems to give you a false positive.

Q: Has anyone ever took the medicine Abilify and done well?
My son’s doc. wants to try him on Abilify and Resperdal. He was diagnosed with borderline Schziphrinia. Is these drugs good and is one better then the other?

A: Hi Hun! I have taken both of them. They were very good meds for me. The resperdal is an antipsychotic, it helped me with the voices! Plus it helped me sleep better I took mine at night. I only go on it if I start hearing voices, I don’t take it all the time. The abilify I have been taking for 7 months now. It was a miracle drug for me. I have no side effects from it at all. All meds effect everyone differently. I would give the abilify a try. If your son’s doctor approves it. I hope they find the right meds for your son soon. Hugs! Von!

Q: does the medicine abilify cause weight gain?
its a medicine to treat schizophrenia

A: Studies show a slight weight loss of about 1.5 pounds on average for Abilify use.

Q: does the medicine abilify have a lot of symptoms???

A: Abilify does have side effects. They include fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, jerky muscle movements, dizziness and drowsiness. A full list of side effects is on the page listed below.

Q: Does the medicine abilify has side effects on liver?
I don’t take alcohol nor smoke. However, I’m on the plump side. I do have fatty liver. That’s why I’m concerned if the medicine has side effects on liver.

A: Yes, it can. However, most people do not experience this.

It is important that you refrain from discounting a particular medicine because of potential side effects. If you do that, you could never enjoy the benefits of that medicine. That is why medical follow up is so important. The physician’s role is to be alert for potential side effects and assess for the same.

A side issue that is frequently present in relation to concern about Abilify and liver function is alcohol use. Don’t know if that is an issue for you. Alcohol use is very contraindicated with concurrent use of Abilify for many reasons. So if you are concerned about liver damage, it would be best to say good by to alcohol. The benefits of Abilify outweigh the benefits of alcohol use.

Q: do you act different when taking abilify, and other mood disorder medicine?

A: I think I did, yeah..when I was on an anti-depressant, I think I got a lot more suicidal than usual and I can’t really remember but I think I got a little more short-tempered. It was about 2 years ago though.

Q: Is abilify a good medicine?

A: Those atypical antipsychotics were put on the market under the pretexts of small scale studies. Ten years after such products have been on the market we know that the side effect profile and therapeutic benefits are the same as older antipsychotics, yet they cost outragesous amounts of money.

They promote diabetes, and sudden unexplained death in the elderly, and are used to control the elderly warehoused in deplorable living conditions against their will in nursing homes.

The money spent on these medicines could be spent for home care of the elderly, instead the money is drained from medicare part D at an alarming rate. But, maybe in the long run it will kill off the elderly earlier and present a cost savings, but I won’t be saving any money on it.

Q: Would it be ok to take abilify after smoking weed and missing a dose of medicine.?
I ended up thinking I should get off of Abilify . I have been on it for four days. Yesterday I decided to skip a dose because, I wanted the side effects i was having to go away , they were driving me mad. I had bad shakes and muscle tension , I was confused and restless too. I ended up smoking “weed’ thinking it would help out yesterday and today. I’m now think that besides the side effects I might be missing out on a medicine that could work so, i’m thinking of taking another abilify to start the side effects all over again. Will it be ok to start the medicine even after smoking weed and even though I had such bad side effect?

A: It should be but if ur having side affects from the meds u should tell ur doctor!

Q: Anyone been on an anti-psychotic like Abilify and not gained weight?
I’m a small slender person and I gained 20 lbs in 3 months on Abilify!!
I think the medicine makes me feel better and would like to keep it. If you’ve been able to not gain, please tell me what you are eating or NOT eating. Thanks!

A: Your quality of life is better and I think that’s more important … so your a bit more curvy that’s ok! Make sure your eating healthy and everything else will take care of itself.
