Q: Abilify for depression in teen?
He has been going to therapy for depression for the last few months. Tonight he just started taking Abilify. I just looked online and read about it and came across that this is a antipsychotic drug for bipolar disease. He doesn’t have bipolar.. Can this be used alone for depression with no other antipdepressant medication? Why would she prescribe this?

A: Because she’s nuts. You need to take him off it go see a different doctor right now.

Abilify is an extremely powerful ANTI-PSYCHOTIC drug. It could give him permanent twitches, make him drool, make him seize, even cause toxicity. Anti-psychotics are highly addictive and dangerous for someone so young.

Abilify isn’t even approved for bipolar disorder, let alone depression. It’s used off-label for bipolar pretty frequently, usually as a last resort, because the side effects are so severe.

Sometimes Abilify is prescribed in extreme cases of depression where NO OTHER DRUGS have worked. There is no reason other than insanity that she would prescribe this as his first medication.

And no, it should not be used alone. It should be used in conjunction with an antidepressant.

DO NOT mess around with this. Get a second opinion before you put him on this drug. There’s no reason he can’t wait to start it until you have. Because I am sure that any psychiatrist you talk to will be just as alarmed as I am that she give him Abilify alone as his first depression med.

One of 2 things has happened here.
1. You’ve gone to a crazy doctor.
2. Someone from the company is paying her a lot of money to prescribe and advocate this drug.

EDIT: luvacat3: Abilify is FDA approved as a drug for schizophrenia. It is accepted to be used off-label for bipolar 1, and now, for severe depression. But its intended use is for schizophrenia.

Q: Why would my aprn prescribe abilify for depression when its an antipsychotic?
I have been with a therapist for about 6 months now…
she suggested i see their pdoc to prescribe a med. she told me i should take abilify. i looked it up online and it said it was an antipsychotic. i asked her why she prescribed and antipschotic and she said ti is approved for depression as well.
i have been taking it for about a month and it helps me not have intrusive thoughts, etc. but i dont like the side effects. it makes me feel like i am on speed and i cant sit or stand still.
she said i could switch to another antipsychotic but they mostly have the same side effects.
now why would she want me to try another AP when she told me it was approved for depression???

A: I wonder what your psychiatrist said when you ask him/her that question, besides saying it is also prescribed for depression?
Ask the doctor what SYMPTOMS they are prescribing for. Insurance companies recommend medications for diagnoses, but doctors prescribe medications to relieve symptoms. Maybe you were having predominantly intrusive thoughts and they sought to manage them.
As far as side effects, yes a class of medications have the same side effects, but each medication affects a PERSON differently. That is why there is more than one medication for the same thing. The side effects of each medication affects each person differently even in the same class. If your doctor is not explaining this to you, ask for another doctor. Each doctor relates differently to different people. Find one that relates to you.
Also, seek behavioral methods for managing your thought processes and emotions. In the end you have to manage yourself. I’m not saying it is easy, but every journey starts with the first step.

Resurfacing of side effects of welbutrin? and abilify?

I took medicine when I was 12 or 13 years old for mood disorder or something?
Abilify and Welbutrin

I didnt believe i needed them but my parents forced me to comply with the doctor’s instructions

****** retards

I stopped taking them 8 months after I first started taking them

and i definitely remembered experiencing some of those symptoms like headaches and whatnot (and decreased sex drive) altho I was 13 at the time

today, I experience somethings that were listed in the side effects even though Ive been off them for about 4-5 years now

like

decreased sex drive and dry mouth and what not

since i believed that I didnt need them, nothing good could’ve came out of taking those medicines

arae side effects permanent?
or could it have delayed my puberty/stunted growth/ or something?

I found an article online saying that ADHD treatment meds like abilify can stunt growth in height and weigth

so Im worried

A: Nope, they don’t have any of those long term effects. Don’t worry about that.

G’luck!

anyways the side effects of Welbutrin are:

Allergic reactions to this drug may show the following symptoms: trouble breathing, rash, itching, swelling, or severe dizziness.

and for Abilify: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal thinking; chest pain; confusion; fainting; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; increased sweating; increased thirst, urination, or appetite; involuntary movements of the tongue, face, mouth, jaw, arms, legs, or back (eg, puffing of cheeks, puckering of mouth, chewing movements); loss of control over urination; loss of coordination; mental or mood changes (eg, anxiety, depression, hostility); muscle tremor, jerking, or stiffness; one-sided weakness; seizures; severe restlessness; shortness of breath; suicidal thoughts or attempts; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; trouble swallowing; trouble walking; unusual bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision or speech changes.

A: Drugs only stay in the body for so long (vary depending on its half life). Once the drug is out of your system you should not experience any side effects.

Abilify can cause a decrease in appetite and therefore can cause weight loss. In order for your body to grow you need to eat lots of protein and have plenty of calcium in your diet. But as Abilify causes a disinterest in food it can INDIRECTLY cause stunted growth.

Wellbutrin better known now as Bupropion would not have any effects on growth at puberty or weight loss. Although it is prescribed for people with CV disorders and not mood disorders so I’m not sure why you were given that.

Q: Would the drug “Abilify” be in any way helpful in reducing obsessive anxious thoughts?
I went to a doctor to get help with obsessive anxious thoughts and he prescribed me “Abilify” — I came home a researched this and it seems like it comes with a lot of nasty side effects like Akathisia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akathisia) and can cause Tardive Dyskinesia?

I can’t find anything online that would imply that it might help with anxiety, only that it would likely increase anxiety. So.. did I just waste a bunch of money on a useless doctors appointment?

A: Antipsychotics can greatly help with obsessive intrusive thoughts, but they are thought to worsen OCD if not taken in conjunction with an SSRI. Are you on an anitdepressant? If not, then you might want a second opinion. If you are, then Abilify might do the trick. Zyprexa and Cymbalta work marvelously together to remove most of my obsessive thoughts. Don’t worry about the side effects, I took Abilify and only had mild akathisia. There are side effects to every med, but they are safe. Don’t worry too much over it. Give it a shot, if the side effects are too bad, go off.

Q: Should I keep taking Abilify? I’m scared!?
I was prescribed 2mg of Abilify today for anxiety and depression. I took my first pill today and other than some restlessness I felt ok. After reading all these scary things online saying it can kill me and reading the patient information I am very worried! Should I call my dr. to ask her to switch meds or is there something natural from GNC I can take for major depression? I feel so helpless because both Zoloft and Celexa gave me adverse effects so SSRI’s scare me now. Please I really need some advice :(
Green Oak- I lost my sister to a drug overdose this summer two months before my wedding. In December I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant, then the day after Christmas I got laid off from my job, and had a miscarriage two weeks after.

A: Why do you want to ask your doctor? Seem like she is the one trying to kill you with the pills. Did you ever think to ask what the ingredients are in those pills. Might be rat poison, dung or sugar. But then again if you think about it, that is what the dr. went to school for is to learn how to operate, radiate, or chemicalize you. Other than that they don’t know anything about you. They don’t live in your body. How can they know how you feel? And when I think about it, I think what a racket it is between the Dr. and the pharmacy. You go to the dr. $100.00, Precribes pill. You go to pharmacy, $100.00. You take pills that make you high. Now you go to Dr. again. $100.00. Dr. perscribes new pill. You go to pharmacy for pills. $100.00. You take pills and you feel low. Now you go again to the Dr. again. $100.00 Perscribes sugar pill. You go to pharmacy for sugar pills. $100.00 You take sugar pills and feel better. End results: Doctor $300.00 richer, Pharmacy $300.00 richer, You $600.00 less plus time spent. And you are still depressed. All those pills may effect the body but not the soul(your mind, will and emotion) where the problem really lies. Refuse to be depressed and refuse anxiety. That doesn’t belong to you. Your better than that.

Q: Is/or has been on the schizo-drug Abilify?
I only want answers from those who are or have been on this medication. Did you gain weight? Were you drowsy all day? I really, really, really want to know because Celexa made me gain over 75lbs and I’m not going through it again with Abilify. I know weight gain caused by abilify is rare but it does happen and I don’t want to be one of those people. Please help. I’ve already read the facts and info on this medication on med books and online research, I just want honest responses from those who have been or still are on it. Please. =(

A: Hi. I was on Ability for awhile and it did help. You should know that it’s not an SSRI/anti-depressant in the same way Celexa is. Ianti-psychoticnt class and works in a different way. Abilify did have some side effects that caused me to swienuresisan alternative atypical antipsychotic med but weight gain drowsiness were not one of them. One of the side effects I experienced was occasional eneuresis. I switched to Invega which is a time release, metabolized version and it worked better for me. Everyone is different and I would encourage you to not be afraid to try other options if you are unhappy with the one you are on. Sometimes, as in my case, doctors might tell you that the side effect you are having is “unlikely to be associated with that med,” but I’ve learned that there is no typical patient. Hang in there. Sometimes it feels ‘hit or miss’ but you’ll find your groove, trust me.

Q: Can anyone please tell me about the drug Abilify? My dr just took me off?
Respirdal because i was gaining WAY too much weight. But he sort of forgot to tell me side effects, etc. What have you heard about or experienced? Should I take it at night, the descriptions I’ve read online say to be careful while driving, not to take it with other sleep meds, etc. I also have Trazadone I sometimes to help me sleep, so should I stop taking that? And no…I can’t call the dr back because they will make me come in just for advice and it’s really a waste of my time. (yes…i’m looking for a better psyc right now, but for now….?) thanks!

also, the reason he prescribed it was to help with mood swings. but the descriptions don’t talk about that particular purpose (online).

A: Hi there,

I take 15mg/day (I started on 10mg) Abilify for bipolar disorder.

I haven’t really experienced many side effects. For the first few days, I was lethargic, and I had a weird flickering sensation in my eyes. Other common side effects include headaches and nausea. How long side effects last for depends on the person. Mine cleared up after a week or so, and side effects-wise, I’m now fine.

Abilify is used to treat schizophrenia, mania, and has been recently confirmed as a treatment for depression. My psychiatrist prescribed it for me in the hope that it would level off both my mania and depression. That hasn’t really worked: my mania has gone, but my depression hasn’t. Don’t let this put you off though, because I’ve read some accounts on the internet by people who say that Abilify’s worked wonders for their depression.

Take Abilify during the day at first, so you can see what effect it has on you. You might want to avoid driving for the first few days, and then after that you will know if you feel alert enough to drive. Abilify is activating for some people, and sedating for others. If it’s activating for you (makes you feel more awake and alert), then continue to take it in the morning. If it is sedating (makes you feel drowsy and lethargic), then take it at night, so it will help you sleep.

Don’t stop the Trazadone unless your doctor tells you to. Since your doctor doesn’t seem to have said anything about it, I’d say to keep taking it.

Call your doctor if you have any problems.

Good luck.

Q: What is wrong with me?
Well, I’m 14 years old…and the past 3-4 years I’ve been very depressed. I was in and out of bad relationships.I started thinking about suicide A LOT and I began cutting myself and overdosing. I went to a mental hospital and I hated it and lied my way back home.I’ve been getting therapy and I have a doctor, but I don’t think the doctor really understands. I took a test online recently and it said I was moderate, high, and very high of the disorders…most high and very high. It scared me. I’ve been taking Abilify and Lexapro…it works, but my suicidal thoughts have gotten worse, and it doesn’t really help much with my emotions and anger. It seems I’ve developed more problems than I began with. My grandma is schizuprantic and she has really bad nerves. She was beaten and rejected when she was little. I’m wondering if I will end up like her. She is literally on 3 pages of psychotrophic meds. What is wrong with me? I would give more spacific info but I’m running out of characters. :(

A: Now, I’m not clinical psychologist although I am a psychology major in university so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

First I’m going to give you the party line and say that suicide is never the answer. It is a long term solution to a short term problem. I can honestly tell you that I had one of the most difficult and troubled childhoods of anyone you will meet but I’m extremely happy and very glad I’m alive now. If you seriously are contemplating suicide then you need to speak to your parents, friends, and doctors.

Secondly, none of us, and no online test is capable of giving you an accurate diagnosis of what might be “wrong with you.” Only a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist can do that and only after long periods of examination. Don’t trust anyone who wants to diagnose you over a two paragraph yahoo question or your responses a series of 20 mispelled and grammatically incorrect questions on the internet. Please use your doctors as much as possible, that is what they are there for. Don’t ask us what’s wrong with you, ask them.

Thirdly, Depression is not a weakness of personality or a physical lack of strength, it is a psychological disease. Let’s say that you broke your leg or you had a terrible burn or some other sort of physical injury and you went to a different hospital, you wouldn’t lie about not being burnt or having a broken leg and run away from treatment. But thats the difficulty with psychological diseases is that people are afraid to seek treatment. Don’t be afraid. It can be difficult and it can take a lot of effort but it will make your life better. Growing up can be extremely difficult for many people, the ages of 12-15 for boys and 11-14 for girls especially. For some people this adolescent angst, or anger, is more pronounced and others much less an issue but it does fade in time. So trust, me and stick to it.

As far as the medications, one of the most major critiscm of anti-depressants is that they can have a tendency to make sucidal thoughts more powerful at first. However, stick with it and it will go away. Remember, that ultimately the decision to do damage to yourself is in your hands not the drugs so remember that suicide is murder. Murder doesn’t hurt the person who dies but everyone who knows them. Don’t do it to your parents and your friends and your grandmother and everyone else who cares about you.

On another note:
I think that you can rule of Schizophrenia because that develops in people normally from the ages of 20-35. Also the anti-psychotics that your Grandmother is on are extremely different and more powerful then the anti-depressents you have been prescribed. Psychotic disorders are terribly sad and very poorly understood.

Q: Has anyone suffered from Serotonin Syndrome or poisoning? What are the symptoms? Need Help!!!?
I take several medications such as Wellbutrin, Abilify, Cymbalta 120mgs.a high dosage as well as Klonopin.
Also I was injured and am on Morphine, Diladid, and Robaxin.
Can these takin together cause Serotonin Poisoning?

I have severe swollen feet and ankles. The twitching has subsided that was mentioned in a couple of Serotonin Syndrome Symptom online articles.
The twitching got better after going off Abilify.

There is no blood test so how did they diagnose you?
If you can help me in any way please write down whatever you know.
I would appreciate it so much as I cannot get in right away to see my Doctor.

Thank you for any help you can give me. I really appreciate it.

A: I have not been affected myself.

But I’m glad I saw your question today, because I am currently switching meds right now, and have to take both Zoloft, and Lyrica together until I get the build up of Lyrica to end the Zoloft.

Anyway, I looked at some articles today that seemed to be helpful, on about.com

I’d say that if your symptoms are unbearable, or feel to scary, I’d ask to be admitted so I could be monitored through the storm so to speak.

Here’s some stuff from about.com:

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms
by Marcia Purse

Serotonin Syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that is caused by elevated serotonin concentrations in the body. This condition is brought on by the use of “serotonogenic” drugs, which include several types of antidepressants such as SSRIs, tricyclics and MAOIs. Other substances which may contribute to serotonin syndrome include cocaine, L-tryptophan, Lithium, amphetamines, ecstasy and LSD.

All of these drugs and substances affect the neurotransmitter serotonin in some way. Some block nerve receptors; some block reuptake; some slow the breakdown of serotonin; some increase the release of serotonin (for an example, see Street Drugs and BP: Ecstasy). Some people’s bodies are naturally slower than usual at metabolizing serotonin. Nolan and Scoggin reported that patients with vascular disease are at increased risk for serotonin syndrome.

Almost all antidepressants contain a warning that patients should wait at least two weeks (sometimes more) between changing an MAOI-type drug and another type of antidepressant. One of the reasons for this is the danger that having both types of drugs in one’s system can lead to serotonin syndrome. Prozac (fluoxetine) in particular takes several weeks to be flushed out of the body.

Q: zyprexa 5mg once a day?
Just looking for anyone who takes it or has a child taking it. My son was on Risperdal but was having asthma attacks and gaining to much weight with it, so they switched to abilify which made his sleepy during the day so he was cranky and emotional all day. The Dr prescribed Zyprexa 5 mg at bedtime for him to try and we go back in two weeks. I was reading about it online and got scared of all the adverse reactions listed especially seeing suicidal stuff on there several times. He is 6 years old and diagnosed with PDD.

A: I have serious concerns about zyprexa used on a 6 yr old with PDD. First off, its not FDA approved for children, and it is more likely to have a weight gain side effect than risperdal. I don’t like abilify either for him as it is not approved either and I don’t see it used in this area for PDD kids. I live a hop skip and a jump away from top autism facilities like kennedy krieger, and we are at the forefront of psych meds here for this specialty population.

What I see working for this population is risperdal, lamictal (mood stabilizer), and xanex (anti-anxiety)

What I don’t see working on PDD kids are stimulants. Focalin, vynase, ritalin, strattera

I am not concerned about suicidal ideation. This only affects 4 percent of the population, and I am certainly not concerned in a patient so young.

I like seroquel but haven’t seen it used in kids, it is usually used in adults with bipolar or schizoaffective disorder and they are usually insomniacs that are manicy and somewhat paranoid

I suggest getting a second opinion

Q: How to cope with this side effect?
The doctor(she’s not a psychiatrist she’s just a regular MD) who prescribed me abilify is on vacation and I just emailed my counselor about my problem.

Abilify gives me an inner need to move and do something. I’m fine when I’m riding in a car, watching tv, online, doing chores, hobbies, walking. But I have a heck of a time at church. even before it starts. I get restless and the need to move and do something. during sunday school and church I feel the need to move so bad. I don’t know how to deal with this side effect. I even didn’t go to my neice’s baseball practice because I was afraid I would feel an intense urge to move and do something. Please help me! How do I deal with this side effect?

I don’t want to get off this pill because it’s HELPING me! despite the side effects
It is NOT too high! it’s 2mg! The LOWEST DOSE!

A: I recommend taking up a hobby that you can do while you are in church and other places without appearing too disrespectful. I like to crochet! I take a ball of yarn and a hook everywhere I go and make things like baby booties and hats. It fits inside my purse, keeps me from being bored and allows me to pay attention to other things while I work on it. I have never had anyone get mad at me for doing it even in class and church and generally people want to admire my work. I find that having my hands busy keeps me from feeling restless even if I can’t be up on my feet.

Q: Can someone please help me?

A: Try keeping your mind busy, or your hands busy. I have ADD, and i carry a quarter with me everywhere, and i spin it in my hand to keep my mind semi focused. Or try little hand games, they sell little contraptions at Barnes and nobble, they are like puzzles and stuff. You have to get the ring through the small hole, the rope around the knot, stuff like that. If you tap your foot, and keep a steady rythym it helps calm your nerves. try playing with the quarter though, it helps me… But its different for everyone. hmm, let me think…
If you go to her baseball practice againk use it to your advantage. You want to move? Then move! lol If she hits the ball, get up and scream!!! Scream for her, let her know you are there for her! You will make her day i promise. Now church… Lets not scream there. lol
Try the tapping your foot thing, or quietly tapping your leg with your hand. Right now my legs are crossed, and my top foot is bouncing up and down becuz i dont want to be at the computer, lol, but its helping me relax. good luck hun!!

Q: Please HELP, diagnosed with BIPOLAR, what to do?
I would appreciate if you would read all of it then put your input :)

I was diagnosed with bipolar a year and a half ago. I take 600mg of seroquel and 1000mg of depakote ER. I still have trouble getting a deep night of rest. Ive tried abilify, geodon, resipidone, lamictal, and they didnt work.

I wake up during the night without realizing it and im dazed out just thinking. During the day my mind isn’t always clear and I get irritated easily. My head feels pressure as if my thoughts are trying to go fast. It’s difficult to slowly read and fully concentrate on things, like reading a page of news online. Even waiting for an appointment is agitating. Im not a hateful or angry person either.

I woke up this morning feeling like I’m going out of my mind and my head felt heavy like there’s to much going on in my head, even though to me it seems like i’m not really thinking of anything

What can I do to help with this???? Can you make a specific schedule please of what I can do during the day??
I take the seroquel at night and the depakote, and a lot of the times people can’t tell if you have the condition, it starts as an internal thing
i’ve been to three different doctors that said the same thing, also where can i find support groups?

A: those medications are very hard to take, with the side effects
natural treatment is better
omega 3 fish oil is known to help, sleep, eating healthy, good vitamins too
