Q: Do energy drinks create a side effect when used with the medication Bupropion (Welbutrin XL)?
I’ve taken this medication twice daily for 2 years or so now. I’m 17 years old and drink energy drinks on a regular basis. It seems to give an over-extreme rush of rapid brain function. It’s surprisingly helpful for some things.
Only recently since I’ve been experimenting with dosages of energy drinks have I been able to remember some crazy dreams. They’d make very cool art pieces. xD
A: well in my case, generic wellburtin and caffeine had horrible side effects. i got extreme anxiety for no particular reason. i felt like i couldn’t handle normal everyday situations at all. i was just a bundle of nerves tightly wound up.
one of the types of generic wellbutrin is well known for having terrible side effects because one of the fillers used when making the pill.
if you are not having any negative side effects than i probably wouldn’t worry about it. just be careful and look for any negative effects you are having, they may be related to your medications. there are a lot of side effects that aren’t listed on the packages. pharmaceutical companies just want to make money, it doesn’t even matter if their products really help anyone. they have doctors in the palm of their hand as well. (did you know that docs get bonus’s when they prescribe meds?)
just pay attention to your body and make sure that what you are taking is really beneficial.
if you want to see some crazy stuff, i would recommend mushrooms. its probably a lot safer than energy drinks and pharmaceuticals. (i prefer an all-natural high.) no long term effects, people have been doing it for thousands of years. anti-depressants have only been commonly used for around 20-30 yrs.
Q: does the medication Lamotrigine or Bupropion make you tired/sleepy?
I started taking Seroquel and my doctor also put me on Lamotrigine or Bupropion.. I take Lamotrigine once in the morning & once at night.. and I take Bupropion once in the morning.. Yesterday was my first day taking them & I basically slept all day.. Does either one cause that much drowsiness?
A: bupropion gave me a cracked out feeling…i had to stop taking it i freaked out on it. I am now just taking lamotrigine. it does make me a bit sleepy
Q: Bupropion (Wellbutrin) medication advice?
I have been prescribed Bupropion (also known as Wellbutrin) as an aid to quit smoking. I have done research about the medication and I am a little standoffish about taking it now. The dose I have is 150mg twice a day for one month. I am just curious if anyone else has taken this medication before to help them quit or as an antidepressant and how it made them feel?
A: I don’t take it.
The drug can lower the amount of brain stimulation required to produce seizures. Alcohol, when IN the body supresses seizures, BUT when after it leaves the body the brain is much more prone to seizures for up to several days. That is why people on this drug should not drink alcohol.
See the drugs@fda website and click on the label information button.
Q: Can i take medical marijuana for pain and take anti-depression medication at the same time?
Can i take medical marijuana for pain and take anti-depression medication at the same time?
I’m taking anti depression medication (celexa, & Bupropion) for couple of months now. I also have pain in my joints that I have been taking pain medication with little improvements. Now I was thinking of using alternative relief like medical marijuana. Would I have to stop taking my other medications in order to use it?
A: Medicinal marijuana is only available by prescription,in most states it is illegal to have it otherwise.
Normally medicinal marijuana is used for extreme cases of glaucoma (an ocular disease).
I am not sure what the mixing of your anti-depressants and using marijuana would do but since you need a prescription in order to legally use it,asking your doctor would solve the whole question on the ordeal.
Q: Can i take medical merquina for pain and take anti-depression medication at the same time?

A: if u are talking about marijuana, it’s used for cancer patients so they will be able to eat, i doubt they will prescribe it to you
Q: Can anyone share some experienced side effects to the medication Bupropion (generic wellbutrin)?
My husband has always dealt with anxiety but has been off meds. for awhile now. Recently a friend has mentioned the med. wellbutrin to him, so he mentioned it to his doctor. His doctor agreed they will give it a shot. Today was his first day taking it and it made his skin feel sensitive he developed a headache and of course made him a little sleepy. The side effects listed on the medication paper’s say these are common side effects. It also say’s do not take if the patient has had a past of epilepsy- well he has even though he has not had a seizure in almost six years. His doctor is out until tuesday of next week but he feel’s he really need’s to take this medication due to some personal issue’s (the reason why he got on it). Has anyone taken this before with the same problem’s or might know if this will be okay with his past of epilepsy, any advice beside’s the obvious (stop taking it) will definently help us out. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and answer to those who will.
Does anybody know anything about any of this?
A: Bupropion (brand: Wellbutrin) is not to be prescribed for patients with past/present medical history of epilepsy or a seizure disorder because bupropion may induce epileptic seizures. The cases of epileptic seizures are much lower in patients taking Sertraline, which works just like bupropion against depression.
Overall, majority of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) also function as mood stabilizers. At this point, your husband is better off by consulting a physician before he continues taking bupropion.
Good Health To Both Of You!
Q: Traveling to Thailand and have a medication question?
I am prescribed the medications Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion) and Remeron (Mirtazipine). Does anyone know if I can bring those meds into Thailand? I have e-mailed Thai immigration and the US embassy in Thailand and no one replied to my question. I have also been all over the internet looking for the answer, but no luck. If anyone actually knows the answer (not just making an educated guess), please respond ASAP. I am traveling later this week.
A: I’ve been in and out of Thailand a lot with Wellbutrin and Lamictal with no problem at all. Keep them in the original bottle. Have the receipt from the pharmacy if possible and a copy of the doctor’s prescription. Carry all of these things on the plane with you, as both as I know at least Wellbutrin is hard to find there should you lose it, and I don’t think Remeron is available at all. They may open it and look at the pills, but that only happened to me once, and it was fine.
Enjoy your trip!
Q: What do bupropion and other medications like Adderall have in common?
are they dangerous?
And if they are kind of the same medications why are they used to treat an array of “illnesses” varying from anxiety and depression to chronic nerve pain?
A: Hello Matt,
Bupropion and Adderall are common in that both are stimulant medications that increase hear rate and blood pressure. They work differently on different neuro transmitters. Bupropion is used to treat depression and smoking cessation. It is used of label for attention deficit disorder with mixed reviews. Bupropion (also known as zyban, wellbutrin) works as a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, that is it allows for dopamine to linger in the brain a bit longer than it normally does. The big risk associated with Bupropion (Aside from those that apply to all stimulant meds, like fast heartbeat heart attack etc) is the risk for seizures. When combined with other meds, this risk increases. Under a doctor’s supervision, this risk is decreased.
Adderall is a mixture of 4 amphetamines. It is highly addictive when abused. It is used to treat ADHD and Narcolepsy among other things. It increases and prevents the re-uptake (the cleaning up of the neurotransmitter) of dopamine (Reward areas of brain), nor-epinephrine(oh crap is that a tiger in front of me feeling) , and serotonin (I feel happy feeling). Very powerful stuff.
Both meds may not be of help for anxiety. Anxiety triggers the nor-epinephrine response into overdrive, adding adderall will usually create a worsening of symptoms. Bupropion may be a better alternative but most doctors will usually target the GABA (I don’t mind that there’s a tiger in front of me, I’m taking a nap feeling) and Serotonin (happy at the moment or comfortably numb, depends on who you ask) effecting drugs for anxiety and depression. Of course everyone is different and reacts to these drugs differently.
Every medication has its dangers and that is why it’s important to discuss these with your dr. They do after all effect your brain chemistry.
Q: Im starting a new medication called wellbutrin(bupropion)?
I was taking prozac for a few months, then I stopped taking it about a week ago, i think it was really messing with my body, now my depression and anxiety feel much worse. I told my doctor, and she said to try bupropion.
does anyone on here take this? has it worked for you? what do you know about this drug? I really need this stuff to work tried a few other meds and im starting to lose hope on the whole getting better thing. maybe this is how im supost to live the rest of my life. Hating It!
also im losing my health insurance because im turning 23. i dont have much time to figure out what meds will work for me i got till the end of november to get better lol ya right! Iv been living with depression all my life.
these pills have to work! right now i only pay five dollars for prescriptions. when i lose my insurance who knows how much it will be. plus no more doctors visits to find the right treatment. Im doomed!!
A: Prozac came out in 1986. If prozac did not work for you, there are newer drugs that can be beneficial. Prozac did almost nothing for me as an antidepressant. However, I was on wellbutrin for about 3 years, and it helped a lot. Wellbutrin has a reputation to be a stimulating drug, and people can lose weight on it. I don’t know if that is an issue for you. Also, wellbutrin does not have the sexual side effects that prozac does.
I don’t want to get too technical, but these newer drugs are probably better than prozac because they work on different neurotransmitters. In the brain, neurotransmitters help chemicals get from one cell to another. Effexor and cymbalta work on two neurotransmitters—serotonin and norepinephrine. Wellbutrin works on the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine.
So my main point is don’t give up. If one drug doesn’t work, there are many others that can help. If you try wellbutrin, try to get wellbutrin SR (sustained release) or XL (extended release), which can prevent the anxiety that comes with regular wellbutrin.
One of the meds I am taking (abilify) is very expensive. Almost every drug company has what they call a Patient Assistance Program for people who cannot afford the drug. I qualified the the Program and get abilify for free! You can look into that.
I am sorry you are losing your health insurance. However, remember that almost all hospitals have clinics for people without insurance or have low income.
You can also try social work agencies. Many colleges have graduate school students studying social work or psychology. They usually have low cost clinics. If these programs don’t help you, they should be able to give you referrals to other programs that can help.
You can try NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) at www.nami.org. They can try to help you get a psychiatrist in your area. You can contact them at www.nami.org/template.cfm?section=Contact_Us.
I know you are worried. I have been through similar situations. There is hope by trying some of the suggestions I offered. I wish you the best.
Q: Are you or have you ever been on medication to relieve anxiety?
My doctor prescribed me some medicine to help me quit smoking. Upon review of the drug (Bupropion,) I discovered that the reason I was feeling better is because this drug targets stress and is quite successful as a stop smoking drug because of it’s anti-anxiety properties.
I always knew I was stressed, but I had no idea how much difference medication meant, especially medication that didn’t affect a sober state of mind as does this Bupropion drug. I like it a lot.
Are there stronger medications that don’t cause you to get a buzz like Valium that will make me even less stressed out? I ask because all this crap with Bush, Iraq, Iran and everything else the BushCo Federal Govt wants to do to the USA Constitution has stressed me out beyond my limits. And this anti-smoking drug with it’s anti-anxiety properties has made me a heck of a lot less upset. I want something stronger so I can be in ignorant bliss like most everyone else. GIVE ME DRUGS. They seem to work.
A: You forgot to add…
“And that, is the reason the rest of us can’t cope with people anymore. Because everyone else is doped up and taking their bullsh*it on everyone else from behind the delusions of their medication.”
Thanks Prozac Nation!
Making it hard on the rest of us, one pill at a time since 1990…
Q: What is an MAOI? I need to take allergy medication, and it says not to take an MAOI.?
I know what it is, but I want to know if Bupropion (wellbutrin) and/or Lamictal is an MAOI…. I need to take allergy medication and it says not to take an MAOI.
A: MAO Inhibitors are a classification of certain medications that are hardly even prescribed nowadays, if at all.
Wellbutrin is not a MAO nor is Lamictal,, and, it should not interfere with your allergy medication, although, an interaction may occur, as I do not know what allergy med that you are taking.
To be certain, you can either ask your Pharmacist or your Doc’s Nurse.
I hope that this is helpful.
Q: How soon after quitting Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion hydrochloride) can I drink alcohol?
I am currently on the lowest dose and am going to quit. I heard you should not drink any alcohol while on this medication, so how soon after you stop taking it is it safe to drink? (I would ask my psychiatrist, but he dropped my insurance, so…)
A: It would be the safest to wait at least a few days and up to a week before drinking alcohol. Bupropion has a half-life of around 20-30 hours (which means about half of the medication will be out of your body by then). Depending on your metabolism, the drug can linger on for longer. It would probably be safe to have ONE drink starting a day after you stopped the medication, but I would not have more than that after waiting close to a week.
Q: What steps can I take to manage my depression in addition to medication?
I was diagnosed with depression, was prescribed wellbutran/bupropion. What other things can I do to prevent my condtion from getting worse, or to help it?
A: As others have said, see a psychologist and do some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It focuses on changing your negative belief patterns as well as giving you some tools to cope.
Regular exercise
Eat well
Make sure you get enough sleep
Write a list of things you enjoy doing and do as many of them as much as possible
Avoid other depressants (such as alcohol)
Make sure you have a strong support network of people around you.
Good luck and take care.
Q: What will happen to me when my doctor prescribes me some kind of dopamine medication?
It’s called Bupropion HCL. He says my dopamine level is too low.
And it wasnt prescribed for depression.
It’s also not for parkinsons
A: It is a form of Wellbutrin. With this particular drug, it is important to know that this drug causes some not-so-good side effects including: increased restlessness, agitation, insomnia, and anxiety – *especially* when first starting treatment with this drug.
Unfortunately, this drug may also cause seizures if you take *more than* the recommended dose, so make sure you take the exact amount you were prescribed. Secondly, this drug has been known to cause suicidal thinking in teens (usually in the first two months of treatment)- so if you feel you are having these thoughts, this should be mention to your prescriber ASAP. There have been reports of teenager committing suicide while on this drug – it’s not to be taken lightly.
Like all drugs, Bupropion HCL has side effects – such as abnormal dreams, insomnia, headaches, increase heart rate, blurred vision, nausea and vomitting, excessive sweating… and the list goes on. It is important though to know that it is unlikely you will experience every single side effect of any particular drug.
If you don’t like how the drug is effecting you, your doctor will most likely be able to write you an order for a different drug. Good luck on your treatment!
Q: For people who have taken bupropion for depression or to stop smoking: what side effects have you had?
What types of side effects have you had, both while on the medication and while stopping it? Also, if you’ve stopped taking it, how long did it take you to get off of it, and how difficult was the process for you?
A: It added 25 pounds to me which made me even more depressed and also caused a mini stroke that hospitalized me for 2 days. Decided to get off it and go natural. Much better now
