Q: Anyone have anything GOOD to say about Cymbalta?
I’ve tried several different anti-depressants over the past 9 years. None have really had any negative side effects other than lowered sex drive and Paxil would make me extremely irritable when I drank alcohol (which of course is my own fault since you are supposed to avoid it). But with the Cymbalta (which I’m taking for depression and anxiety) my anxiety has increased about a million times over. I keep reading horror stories online about how it makes you suicidal. I’m not to that point but thoughts do run through my head. I told my doctor I was worried about the extreme increase in anxiety and she told me to keep taking it and prescribed some Xanax as well.

Is there any particular reason this drug is affecting me about a million times worse than the 7 or so other medications I’ve tried? People are also talking about how horrible the withdrawal is; I stopped all my other meds cold turkey with no problems, now I’m really worried about getting off this crap.

A: I took Cymbalta for quite a while. I found it to be a lifesaver and getting off the drug was no problem …cold turkey. There are many different anti-depressants. Keep trying. You’ll find the one that’s perfect for you. Do you take in the PM like my Dr. suggested? Good luck. I do know how you feel and I feel for you.

Q: Does Cymbalta cause weight gain?
I just started Cymbalta 30 mg three days ago. I am upping the dose to 60 mg in a few days. Aside from being very tired, I am worried about weight gain. I am reading horror stories online. Anyone have any comments?

A: it depends on your body chemistry, activity level, and health. depression can lead to weight gain (and vice versa) so many people’s horror stories of weight gain are simply because their depression has limited their workout habits, or changed the way they eat (eating for comfort, etc.). if you gained nothing from the 30mg dose, and haven’t changed your activity level or habits, then you should be fine.

also- exercising releases endorphins (the neurotransmitters in your brain that make you feel happier)- which is why it’s so good for people in your situation! best of luck

Q: My doctor prescribed Cymbalta but I’m scared to take it…?
Have you ever taken Cymbalta? What are the side effects you had? All the message boards online have terrible horror stories to say about this drug. I’m having depression and anxiety due to a change in jobs and the new job being very demanding. My doc says I should take Cymbalta but now I’m scared to. I haven’t even talked to a psychiatrist yet so I’m not really sure if I should try the Cymbalta. I’m scared that the side effects will just make my situation much worse. Please help!

A: Unless you have a history of depression I would steer away from medication. Anxiety and depression can be treated with several other non-medications. My physical therapist does cranial sacral therapy. Aromatherapy works well for a lot of people. It sounds like this is a temporary thing. Set aside some just for you time. Make sure you have people to talk to. And make sure you are eating and sleepy the way you need to be.
And this point the medication seems (just the idea of it) to be making your problem worse. Remember that your doctor cannot force you to do anything.
New jobs can be very stressful especially when you are just starting out. Stay the course but be careful that you ain’t doing it alone.
Keeping you in my prayers

Q: Cymbalta Withdrawals and Irregular Cycles…?
Has women who are going through Cymbalta withdrawals also had irregular cycles? I’ve experience spotting in between periods and heavier than normal cycles. I’ve had pain my ovaries, etc… I can’t really find anything online that associates irregular periods with Cymbalta. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be great…

A: Hi -

I didn’t notice that but was on the pill – but the rest of the withdrawal symptoms were horrible. I looked on the attached website and it does list spotting and other menstrual problems as a possible side effect of Cymbalta withdrawal. I know I had hot flashes when getting it out of my system.

Good luck – you’ll eventually get through this, but in the meantime Cymbalta withdrawal pretty miserable!

Q: cymbalta to celexa?
I gave Cymbalta a chance for a little over a month, but it made my depression and anxiety much worse than I was before I started taking anything. My doctor is switching me to Celexa (calling Rx into the pharmacy) so as far as I know there will be no ‘weaning off’ process to go from the Cymbalta to the Celexa. Everywhere I’ve read online talks about withdrawals when getting off Cymbalta whether it be tapered off or cold turkey. How much do you think I’ll be affected jumping straight into Celexa?
Thanks for the responses so far… to Disney, I know exactly what you mean… I never really had suicidal thoughts before (and I still would never do it so this isn’t a “cry for help” or attention) but on this horrible drug all I could think about was how much I hate my life and don’t want to live anymore… I never felt that bad or hopeless when dealing with real depression off medication… or if I did it would only be a day or two, not the majority of a month… :(

A: Wow I can’t believe this question was asked. I just stopped taking Cymbalta a month and a half ago.I had previously been on Celexa but Psychiatrist thought that it might be good to switch. After she did I had never felt so miserable in my life. I am in my thirties with a great job and all I could think about was how to end my life. I have a counselor she said that it was the new medicine (cymbalta) talking. I went back to the psychiatrist immediately. She said she had only seen 4 people in her career react that way to Cymbalta. But took me immediately off. She also prescribed Provigil. Provigil was originally approved for narcolepsy but has been shown to have a “kick in the butt” approach to depression. The next morning I took the Provigal, and instead of laying in bed feeling like death, I got up, took a shower and actually started appreciating life again. I am now taking Celexa and Provigil. My doctor is still amazed at how quickly and drastically my mood changed from complete dispair, to fairly functioning. I was supposed to taper off the Cymbalta, but didn’t. I did not want that chemical to be in my body for one more minute. I had no withdrawal effects. May also be because she introdced the new drug Provigil with it… Warning though if you are thinking about asking your doctor about Provigil make sure you have great health insurance or the doctor has lots of samples. I had to jump though a ton of hoops to get it approved, with out insurance approval, it was going to cost $650.00!!! for a months supply.. Hope this helps, but it a very recent experience for me and strange to see that someone else is switching away and to the same med. Good Luck!

Q: Do you think Cymbalta is causing my acne?
Does Cymbalta cause acne? how long does it last?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been on Cymbalta for just over 3 months now. I developed fairly severe acne a few days after starting the medication and I’m still experiencing it. I’ve been to the dermatologist and an using retin-a to combat the acne but it’s an uphill battle and it has only cleared a little.
I’m doing very well on Cymbalta and don’t want to quit as this is the 4th antidepressant I’ve tried and it works the best. I’ve always had mild acne but this is much worse.
In your experience, did Cymbalta cause acne and did it clear up once your body adjusted? I’ve searched online for answers and found it rarely causes acne but it doesn’t say if this is a side effect that will subside.
Thanks!

A: I think No… because you have Infringement of a fatty exchange …
Cymbalta is only antidepressant. Something wrong with your metabolism. Tolk about with your Dr. may be you need to try Accutane…(here information about Accutane: http://www.prescription-drug-24.com/accutane.html)

Q: Does cymbalta work to treat depression? Are the withdrawal symptoms really terrible?
I have been prescribed cymbalta for major depression. I’m supposed to take 30 mg for a week and then 60 mg after that. I’ve taken it for three nights in a row. So far, the only side effect I’ve noticed is grogginess. However, I have read HORROR stories online of people with side effects and withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking it. Is this a minority of people? I’m interested in hearing others’ experiences with Cymbalta to see if I should continue taking it.
I know you have to taper off gradually, and of course I will see my doctor before I ever decide to do anything. I just want to hear other people’s personal experiences with this drug.

A: I’ve been on cymbalta for over two years and the only side effect that I have is sleepiness and that went away as my body got used to the medication. As I’m still on it I can’t say about withdrawing but you should only do that under a doctors care where they gradually lower the dose. Most difficult withdrawals come when the person them selfs stop the medication with out a doctors help or knowledge. A doctor will rarely take you off of any thing cold turkey unless you’re in a hospital where you can be monitored and taken care of if things get really bad.

Q: Has anyone had a good Cymbalta experience?
Everything I’ve seen online has been pretty negative. My husband took his first dose today, and said he’ss feeling a very strange excited feeling. He’s pretty nervous about taking it, because of it’s bad rep. But I spoke to our pharmacist, and he said that people are more likely to complain about something they hated than rave about something they liked.

Please let me know what you, or whoever you know who has used Cymbalta thought about it.

Please note: He is not taking any other prescription medication currently. The reason Cymbalta has been prescribed to him is that he has low seritonin levels in his body, and the Cymbalta is supposed to speed up his body’s natural healing process.

A: First of all, any antidepressants usually take up to 4 weeks or longer to start working. If he’s feeling strange after his first dose, he should speak to his doctor. I’ve been taking Cymbalta for about 5 or so years now and it works great for me. It’s the ONLY thing that’s worked for me. The only downfall is with most antidepressents, with the exception of Wellbutrin, it can really put a damper on your sex drive (assuming you are old enough…). But, it has made me feel “normal” for years now.

Q: Can I stop taking Cymbalta after only 4 days?
I recently was prescribed Cymbalta. I have only taken it for 4 days (30 mg). I don’t like the side effects I am having (nausea, no desire to eat, insomnia) and I don’t like what I am reading about it online. It seems that a lot of people have had problems with it and also that the withdrawal symptoms are listed as intense. I have only taken it for 4 days and have not noticed any difference in my mild depression or anxiety. Is it ok to just stop since I haven’t been taking it that long?

A: If you have decided to stop, then do it now, as your body is still getting used to it. It may help make the discontinuation effects not as bad. I was on it for a year and it messed me up. Maybe ask to try Celexa.

Q: pill prescription assistance?
I just got prescribed Cymbalta, I got a months worth of samples, i read online that the cost is about $120 a bottle for a month! I can’t afford that…does anyone know where I can get assistance or discounts for my pills?

A: walmart $4

Q: Medical professionals only please – or pharmacists?
I’ve been taking Phentermine from an online pharmacy of 15 mg a day for the last month or so. My Psychiatrist scribed me 30mg Cymbalta today and I forgot to tell him about the phentermine. I left him a vcml – but he has yet to get back to me. I want to take the medication tonight like he told me to, (but did take my phentermine this morning) already…. Can I still take the Cymbalta? Will someone please clarify one or BOTH are MAOI’S???
Thank you ladys. I plan to discontinue the phentermine as of today since I got the Cymbalta…. Just want to make sure it wasn’t an MAOI before I tool my Cymbalta. Just didnt’ want it to kill me or anyting. I was not planning on takin the phentermine unless my Dr ok’d me to.

Thank you VERY much for all the help.

A: Call the pharmacy and call your doctor in the am, please wait for his call.
IT is illegal for a medical professional to give advice w/o being your perscribing doctor.
wish i could help you.

I personally know many people who have had lots of problems with Cymbalta, and getting off that cymbalta is very hard, and phyically painful.
Ask your doctor about side effects, and what will happen if and when you decide to go off this medicine.

It sounds like your Doctor needs to know ALL medications you are on.

Please WAIT!!
Call a 24 hour pharmacy, they can tell you if your first medicine is MAOI
Cymbalta is not MAOI — it’s an SSRI and N—– med it’s strong
too strong for the people i have known that have taken it
here is the cymbalta webstie www.depressionhurts.com

Q: What is causing my constant itching?
I have had severe itching for almost a week now. I saw my doctor yesterday regarding the issue, he did some kind of tests, and told me it was just due to the fact that I had recently stopped taking Cymbalta. I have never heard of this and I can’t really find anywhere online where it says any withdrawal symtpom is itching. I am still worried that it is something else, even though I have seen a doctor. The fact that it gets worse at night/when I think about it worries me. I can go a few hours without itching and then the thought, “hey, you haven’t itched in a while” pops into my head, and within 5 minutes, my entire body is itching again. I don’t have scabies, I’ve used some special spray to kill mites/bugs on my bedding, no animals/fleas. I was on Cymbalta for a year and 6 months and have been gradually taken off of it over the past 2 months. I was on it for minor depression/anxiety. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A: if the dr said its side effects, it probably is, try taking some bennadryl, and maybe a oatmeal bath. it wont last forvever,

Q: sound like medication/mental health related or not….?
hello i have been taking these drugs: 60mg of Cymbalta once a day and Topamax 100mg once a day. i have clinical depression and anxiety disorder and been on cymbalta for almost 6 months and topamax about 3 or so weeks now. anyways, at night time for the past week while i am in a deep sleep i been waking up with involuntary tremors in my legs and arms my head will also turn slowly from side to side. my lips will blow very fast and i can’t stop them, it’s a pretty strange sight LOL. This all occurs for about 1-2 minutes and then stops, I’m aware it’s occurring but can’t stop it all until my body “releases” me from it. I am disoriented for a few minutes afterward but then fine. I start reading online about tardive dyskinesia — does any of these symptoms sound like that and can be related to these drugs or not? doctors found a small cyst on my brain unrelated to the mental illness could that be causing these strange symptoms? ty.

A: yess

Q: tardive diskinesia symptoms or not and Topamax?

A: From my knowledge, tardive diskinesia is caused by typical antipsychotic agents. These agents decrease the level of dopamine in the brain.

Cymbalta is a SNRI, which increases norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain.
Topamax is an anticonvulsant that works by blocking sodium channels and blocking glutamine receptors. It also may remove excess dopamine (I read this works in alcoholics to help abstain from drinking though)

So that last statement about Topamax, ,it may be causing a decrease in dopamine …which would result in what’s going on with you.. So it might be causing an imbalance between your dopamine and your acetycholine in your brain….this is why you may be having Parkinson like symptoms or extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). I’m going to suggest to call your doctor and schedule and appointment and tell him what’s going on. He may suggest, and I’m going to suggest….take a “drug holiday”. If you can do both, that would be great. If not, definitely try doing the Topamax. That is, don’t take your topamax for a day to see if the symptoms go away.

In the end whether that works or not, you should still go to your doctor.

** docs also found small cyst on my brain could that be causing weird symptoms too?

A: Actually these are pretty classic symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, especially the involuntary movements and lip smacking. Typically the “dopamine drugs” (like metoclopramide or antipsychotics) are responsible for this. Are you on any other medications?

However, Cymbalta and Topamax both can cause dyskinesia. I looked up the patient inserts and it is in there, although mostly rare. Typically those two drugs are not associated with tardive dyskinesia. You definately should let your doctor know as tardive dyskinesia can be a permanent condition.

If I had to say one or the other, I would say Cymbalta might be more likely to cause than Topamax because it affects norepinephrine which dopamine is a precursor to.
