Q: Where is the cheapest pharmacy to purchase Effexor XR 75mg??
My husband is being relocated to VA and I will have to leave my job Dec 1st. After that, I will no longer have insurance. Does anyone know where the cheapest pharmacy (legit pharmacy) is to fill my Effexor XR prescription might be? Wal-Mart has given me generic for $80, but it doesn’t work as well…

A: ask the walgreeens pharmacist about the card you buy for twenty or so dollars. you get big discount on a lot of name brands if you are not insured. ask them to check and see if this medicine will be covered.

if nt , i suggest you look into costco or sams club. get doctor to write a 90 day prescription . get that filled all at once . much less expensive. than buying monthly. you do not have to be a member to go to the pharmacy. just ask at the door and go to and from the pharmacy

ask doctor if they can also write a seperate one .. for 90 and one for 30 and use that with the insurance companies right away in dec. before insurance expires. you will probably have insurance at least through Jan 1 ? if so get your other stuff through costco when you no longer have to pay.

try to stock up though on this while you are covered . you will have a 3 mo supply … plus the one month supply ..you tell them you need the 30 to get buy until your mail order prescription is filled .

you can consider mail order .. caremark through AAA has a discount.

Q: EFFEXOR: Cheapest extended release formulation?
I’ve noticed that there are many different formulations of extended release venlafaxine. I don’t have insurance and was looking to find the cheapest way to get this drug. The extended release that Costco sells is priced too high.

Also, is it possible to split a VENLAFAXINE HCL ER 150 MG tablet in half to get two even 75mg doses?

Thank you.

A: Krka distributes an extended release version of venlafaxine xr in capsules of 37.5mg, 75mg, and 150mg.

In the USA in Sep 2008 Osmotica Pharmaceuticals began marketing venlafaxine xr tablets to compete with Wyeth’s capsuole form.

Generic forms are available in the USA and Canada, and generic xr in Canada, India, UK (Vaxalin) and Israel.

Wyeth sells venlafaxine xr under the name “Efexor-XR” (one f not two); in Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. In Brazil, Medley sells the xr under Alenthus XR.

Q: Why did my Dr. put me on Pristiq rather that Effexor?
Venlafaxine is a lot cheaper, as it has gone generic. Why would my doctor choose Pristiq over it then?

A: Probably because your doctor is hoping for better results with the Pristiq. I am on Pristiq right now and it seems like it is working really well. I know there isn’t a generic, but if it works I am willing to pay the extra. I believe Pristiq has less side effects than other anti depressants. However, I would suggest asking your doctor. Good luck!

Q: Tranxene for Effexor withdrawal?
I have seen a lot of posts about persons suffering for months attempting to get off of Effexor. I myself suffered the same fate and was able (after trying for 2 – 3 months), to get off in 3 days. This was after getting down to 37.5mg /day.

I was given Tranxene for 2 weeks and by the 3rd day, all the Effexor withdrawal symptoms had disappeared. I have finished the course of Tranxene with no addditional ill effects, and am totally symptom free … back to normal and so grateful for it.

I have found this to be an fast, cheap and effective solution, and I am surprised that I haven’t seen it anywhere before. Much kudos to my dcotor. I don’t even know how he came up with the solution but it worked.

Has anyone else out there tried this drug, with the same remarkable results?

A: I took Tranxene for for epilepsy years ago.

Q: is there any reason why I should not take the generic version of effexor xr (venlafaxine HCl)?
I want to switch to the generic because it is cheaper. Is it just as good or is there any reason to be concerned about taking it?

A: The generic of any medication is exactly the same as the original except for the fillers sometimes. The interactive chemicals are the same so it should have the same result for less money. I noticed no difference switching from Wellbutrin XL to the generic.

Q: Effexor versus Effexor XR?
I used to be on 75 mg of Effexor XR a day, but now I no longer have health insurance so I have to take regular rapid release Effexor which is much cheaper.

Does this mean I have to take two 75 mg tablets throughout the day or can I still only take one?

Has anyone switched between the two? What is the big difference? Also, does the regular Effexor pill require a ramp up period?

A: Effexor XR is an extended release formulation which means that you only have to take one pill a day and the drug is slowly released overtime in your body.

This means that Effexor is not an extended release drug and it needs to be taken at least twice a day (although in my knowledge I think it might be three times a day but dont hold me on that).

Effexor was formulated into Effexor XR for the convenience of once daily dosing.

ADDITION: Just make sure you’re not taking generic Effexor XR, as it is generic now. Taking generic XR more than once a day can lead to overdose and serotonin syndrome.

Q: About asinine behaviour of my doctor. I started taking Effexor, very slowly , the smalest dosage – 37.5mg.?
Effexor started acting immideately – decreased symptoms of anxiety, etc on the 3rd day, wow.Trouble falling asleep – all the side affect I had, which is not bad. My THERAPIST thinks the smaller the dosage the better ( if one glass of wine makes you happy, relaxed and you don’t want the second one – great.)
Doctor told me – either I take 75 mg ( like he was told at school, he is 75, at what school I wonder he learned to treat all the patients like they are not individuals?) or I should find myself another doctor. Gave me prescription for 75 mg. If I don’t want take it – don’t, said he. Right, go of the anti-depressant cold turkey. Not a big deal from his point of view, – it is a smallest dosage.

This medication is faaaar from cheap. Playing pill roulette – is also lots of fun.
I done with emotional outburst, so please tell me, IS THAT CORRECT THAT DOCTOR MUST INCREASE A DOSAGE, OR MY DOCTOR WENT OVERBOARD?
He actually accused me of telling him how to treat his patient, OMG

A: I think you should take the lowest effective dose. Which is a common practice. I took effexor for quite a while and found that the 37.5 dose worked well. Using the lower dose made the side effecte bearable. More than that the side effects were bad.

Q: Pristiq vs Effexor?
I have been trying Pristiq for about a month now and it is working great. However, I would like to change over to Effexor as i can get this prescription cheaper through insurance and barely have to pay anything. Can anyone tell me If Effexor will work as good as, or better than Pristiq? What are the differences? Thanks for your help!

A: I have been on Effexor for about 4 years and it works well for me. I was just at my doctor’s office today and he gave me 4 weeks worth of Pristiq samples to try, because I really want to get off the Effexor, mostly because of the side effects. With Effexor, I have terrible sweating, mostly on my head and face, so bad it’s embarrasing! I have to run a fan even in the winter, I sweat so bad. And also, I really want to try to get off the Effexor safely, because I tried to withdraw myself from it about a year ago and I’m telling you the withdrawal from Effexor is horrific! If you read on the internet about Effexor withdrawal symptoms, you’ll read some horror stories, and let me tell you they are all true. If I had it to do over again, I would never start taking Effexor. I just hope the Pristiq will work for me, without the sweating side effect. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to come off the antidepressants, because of the withdrawals, even if I don’t feel like I need them that much any more. In my opinion, if the Pristiq works for you, don’t switch to Effexor! Of course I’m not an MD and all medications work differently for different people. I’m just telling you what I’m going through. Good luck!

Q: Cipramil or Effexor ?
Im on 300mg of Effexor & don’t feel any effects neither good or bad. I was on Cipramil 3 yrs ago & it worked but my GP after a year said it was cheaper to go on Lexapro as it was the same ( I since have found its not).

I stayed on that for 2 yrs & felt I was going down hill so 3 months ago I changed to Effexor. I am seeing Psychologist for councelling to also help.

I am just unsure if to stay on Effexor & hope that upping the dose will help or to change back to Cipramil, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated:)

A: I am on Effexor (bout 6 months now) and it is the only medication that I have tried and noticed a change in my depression. Everyone is affected differently of course, and I felt HUGE results the first 2 weeks, but that good feeling has since waned. One thing I do not like about the Effexor is the withdrawal symptoms I have if I stop taking it. I get night sweats, nausea, headaches, and when I turn my head I get dizzy and my hands tingle. Weird.

I recently lost my job due to social anxiety and depression and can’t afford treatment…and I desperately need it. I’m about to become homeless. I have a different feeling about homeless people now knowing how easy it can happen.
I wish you well!

Q: Effexor XR vs. generic version?
I’ve been taking 75 mg Effexor XR once daily. At the checkup he said he wanted to keep the dosage the same. I talked to him about the expense, and he switched me to the generic version which I’m supposed to take twice a day. The prescription was only $5 cheaper, and the dosage of each pill is still 75 mg (same as the once daily dose of the namebrand Effexor XR). It seems to me that the dosage should be dropped to half of the original dosage since I’m taking the generic twice as often. I asked a nurse at his office who said that because the generic is not extended release that it’s ok that I’m taking 150 mg a day rather than 75 mg daily of the name version, but it just doesn’t convince me.

Does anyone have any experience changing from once daily Effexor XR to the twice daily generic equivalent?

A: I use to go back and forth depending on the pharmacy’s supply and never noticed any difference between the two. As for the differences in dosage I would call a pharmacist as they would have the best answer for you.

Q: Does anyone know of an anti-depressant similar to Effexor XR?
I take effexor xr 75 mg for panic attacks. I dont have insurance right now and it is like $155 for a 30 day supply, and they dont offer a generic in this perticular brand (XR) Does anyone know of a good one I can ask my Dr to switch me to that does come in a generic form that is similar to effexor xr, with very little side effects that would be a whole lot cheaper? Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who can help!!

A: I take effexor XR 150mg for depression. I also don’t have insurance and so my parents buy it through a drugstore in canada (online). It is now legal in the USA to buy from an online canadian drugstore for up to a 3 months’ supply of medicine. We use adv-care.com and they have effexor XR in a generic format. You have to do a lot of paperwork and get a prescription for 3 months (or 100 ct., i can’t remember) but it is soooo much cheaper. Definitely look into it as this drug has helped me amazingly and i would not want to try to go without it right now in my life.

Later addition:
I looked up on the website how much it costs. It costs about $50 a month…a third of what you pay in the US! The generic name is: RATIO-VENLAFAXINE XR or just venlafaxine XR
good luck!

Q: Who knows if Celexa with the generic name Citalopram is as good for depression as Effexor XR?
I find medicine costs way to much and I am trying to help my insurance save money. It costs $ 195 for Effexor XR for a months supply for the generic verision. The brand name is $ 160. I know this is strange because usually the generic is cheaper. The generic used to cost $ 165 last month and went up $ 30 in one month. I had to pay cash and the insurance reimburses me 100%. The pharmacist told me that the Celexa costs $ 10. If anyone knows a medicine that works as well as Effexor XR in generic please let me know. I was told that Celexa don’t work as good as Effexor XR by the nurse at my doctor’s office. Please help I need an answer on this!!

A: zoloft did not work well for me, i went up to 150mg before tapering off and going onto effexor xr at 75mg. i wouldn’t trade effexor for anything, it has brought me back out of a severe state of depression and now i am in total remission. as others have said, it really is different for each person.

Q: When do Prescriptions lose their Patent Protection…. ?? Meaning when can others make it for a ton cheaper?
For example EFFEXOR has been around @ least 10 years… cause i took it in 1998, yet it still doesnt have a generic, effexor xr Doez But Effexor dont, so how long is it? I have heard 8 years, 14, cant be 8 cause Effexor wuld hav one by now then… so WHO KNOWS?!?!

A: The rules on patent expiration changed sometime in the 90’s. It used to be that patents were valid for 17 years from the issue date. Now, in general, they are valid for 20 years from the date the application was filed.

However, there are some other issues. If the patent office took longer than it should have (and it almost always does) the applicant is granted a “patent term extension” to compensate for that delay.

Additionally, because the FDA can also be quite slow, the term of a patent might be extended to compensate for delays at the FDA (it doesn’t do you any good to have a patent for 20 years if the FDA takes 15 years to approve it).

So, it depends. You’ll probably have better luck googling for articles that discuss when effexor is going to go “off patent”.

Q: Has anyone ever taken Xanax for depression?
I went to the doctor last week for depression. I expressed that I was a little concerned about the cost of an anti-depressant due to the fact that I don’t have health insurance. I know that the drug that I took previously was around $150 a month (Effexor). I’m willing to pay that I just don’t want to if there’s something out there just as effective and cheaper. He prescribed Xanax. I’m constantly sleepy. I feel “zoned” all the time and it definantly hasn’t given me the drive that I was looking for…if anything it’s taken it away.
I took effexor for about a year before I got pregnant. Once pregnant I discontinued the drug and went through a horrible post pardum period. I thought I could talk my way out of it but it’s just getting worse. I truly don’t feel like getting out of bed somedays.
I think he prescribed Xanax due to the fact that it has an available generic. I’m just wondering how long before I discontinue? should I give it at least another week?

A: Xanax for depression? That is CRAZY! Xanax can CAUSE depression. I have taken it before in conjunction with an SSRI antidepressant and I stayed very lethargic and depressed and wanted to isolate myself.
I have known many people who have had similar problems with Xanax. It is also very habit forming. Klonopin is a far better substitute if you need something for anxiety and it is available I generic.
Don’t stop Xanax cold turkey. Wean yourself off a little at a time. Going off of it suddenly can cause some really serious problems for some people!
Hope you feel better!!

Q: Can and will Topamax reduce weight gain with the Prozac? – PLEASE HELP!!!?
Im using Prozac,60mg for OCD and it seems to be quiet effective. My appetite seems to be gone, but I seem to have constipation. I was previously on Zoloft, 175 mg, before I discontinued it due to costs and weight gain. I am using generic Prozac becuase its cheap and have started taking 25mg of Topamax with each Prozac capsule.

I am quite worried about the weight gain as I am athletic and I have gained 11 pounds with Zoloft. So far, after using Prozac for +-5 weeks my weight appears to be stable. I don`t want gain, and I want to get back to what I was. I do excerise and all, but it just bothers me. I do know what SSRIs are and how they work and their side effects and so on, so I don`t need an explanation – I also know about Wellbutrin and Effexor and so on. But generic prozac is CHEAP!!

My strategy is to take 25mg Topamax (Topiramate) tablets with every dose of Prozac (20mg) I take a 20mg dose three times a day.

Has any1 had any luck?Experiences/opinions/inputs and stories please?

A: Are you being prescribed the Topamax? What does your doctor say? I tried Topomax to combat weight gain and saw no real difference, certainly not enough to use it for that purpose alone. I totally feel your pain since I have gained about 50 lbs over the last ten years while getting my mental health care under control but all the medicines do is increase appetite. I found that a diet supplement helps with that better than an additional medication. Good luck.
