Q: How can I safely and effectively “ween” myself off of Effexor medicine for depression?
I have done some research in regards to 5HTP and Omega-3 fish oils. Has anyone had a similar experience with positive or negative results?
All answers appreciated!
A: Defintely talk to yoru doctor first. I am on effexor xl 225mgs daily and I know how shi* I feel if I miss a days worth the side effects so coming off altogether is hard.
Your doc will be able o give you the correct dose to take daily to wean yourself off. You really shoudl never stop taking them without your doctors advice even if you are ging to be aking a natural alternative as sometimes it can affect it.
Good luck
Q: What are the names or different forms of the medicine effexor?
and also is cyclobenzaprine a form of effexor? and no links please. i will chose a best answer :]
A: Cyclobenzaprine is a generic form of Flexeril, a muscle relaxer and central nervous system depressant.
The generic for Effexor just came out. It is called venlafaxine.
Q: With time released effexor XR what is the increment in which it releases the medicine?
With effexor XR is the medicine released in 2 increments? Is it released slowly over a period of the day? Because i am taking it, and i will take it at 1 or 2 and i won’t be able to sleep at night. I get real wrestless and i toss and turn and get real finicky. How is it released i guess is the question?
A: my pharmacist told me that it stays in your system for about 18-20 hours. if it keeps you awake, try taking it in the morning. or possibly lunch time, it wont matter what time of day…. as long as its around the same time every day.
Q: What would happen if you take a depression medicine like Effexor if you are not depressed?
I do not take anything for depression, but I was just wondering how it would affect someone who is not depressed? Would it make them worse, better?
Thanks!
A: Antidepressants are NOT just “happy pills” like a lot of people think they are. If you’re not depressed, they really won’t do anything to you. you might have to put up with the side effects unnecessarily (goodbye sex drive!), but aside from that nothing really happens. Also, it takes several WEEKS for people who ARE depressed to really start feeling any effects.
The side effects, incidentally, don’t necessarily make you “more depressed”, but would rather give someone who’s MDD the energy to fully feel and act out their depression. The increased risk of suicide on them is actually attributed to the fact that the meds ARE starting to work. Many people with Major Depression have suicidal thoughts, but aren’t in much danger because they literally don’t have the energy to carry anything out. Once you start to have slightly more cognitive function, and slightly more energy, but the mood hasn’t picked up yet, that’s when things get bad. On a normal person, that’s pretty unlikely to happen. Your chemically balanced brain MIGHT, however, stop producing the neurotransmitters (or as much of them, rather) on it’s own, thus making you effectively dependant on said medication if taken long enough. I’m not sure if that happens, but it would kind of make sense.
So, no: bumming a friend’s prozac won’t get you high / happy.
Q: What medicine can I take that will prevent migraines? I am on Effexor XR now and it no longer works. ?
I take Effexor XR to prevent migraines and take Imitrex to get rd of one when I get a migraine.
The Effexor is no longer working and I was wondering what else I could take to prevent the migraines.
Thanks
A: Seriously, have you looked into chiropractic. Migraine headaches are complicated but can sometimes be the result of the a shifted vertebrae high in your neck (C1 aka. atlas). Part of the brain stem travels through this vertebrae, and many occipital muscles connect there as well. When this vertebrae is out of place, it can irritate nerves, as well pull those muscles causing a headache. Like I said, Migraines have many different reasons, but trying a chiropractor is a cheap investment to find out if he can fix them ALL TOGETHER…as compared to the alternative of being on drugs for the rest of your life. Chiropractic is not smoke and mirrors anymore. There is science behind if you look.
Plus the risks and side effects are nothing than that of the drugs on the market today. Whatever you decide, I hope you find relief. Migraines are horrible.

Q: Does the medicine called “Effexor” Come in a generic brand?
A: Plain Effexor tablets do have a generic. It’s called Venlaxafine. However 99% of the people who take Effexor take the XR (extended-release caspule) which does NOT have a generic at this time.
Q: Effexor or Natural medicine?
My doctor prescribe me Effexor, but i was reading the side effects of it and prefer to take something natural. Has anybody tried True Calm by NOW foods? St John Wort? or any other medicine that has help you? please let me know. Something for depression, social anxiety, general anxiety and mild panic attacks. Thanks
I’m mildly depressed, it is more my social anxiety that gives me problems. So my social anxiety stops me from going out and doing normal stuff and that is what gets me depressed. So i need something that will calm me so i could socialize better
Thanks for all your answers.
A: See http://www.amazon.com/True-Calm-Amino-Relaxer-Foods/product-reviews/B000JCVMU6/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 for 4 reviews. Google it, but it seems very hit or miss, and caused severe panic attacks in 1 of the 4 reviewers.
The wort, (has both antidepressant, and anxiolytic properties, but usually slow to act) however, is something I have read a book and several websites about, so I suggest that you check out the posts on panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and social anxiety, at http://your-mental-health.weebly.com/1.html and pages h , i, b, and e, and view the SJW and HYPERICUM websites, using a recommended brand, with meals, and perhaps trying Inositol (a B group vitamin), and/or a low dosage of 5HTP with it, as they may have quicker effects.
Other products are shown, but I suggest keeping them in reserve, for later, if necessary (unlikely) and rely on the core treatments, challenging, and changing your thought patterns, (“Lift your mood now.” by * John D Preston, Psy.D. 2001, New Harbinger Publications, Inc., 5674 Shattuck Avenue, Oakland. CA, & “Feeling Good – the new mood therapy” ** by David D. Burns, M.D.) using an anti panic breathing technique, practising relaxation methods, and correcting vitamin/mineral deficiencies (blood test).
Q: How do I get my self off the medicine Effexor?
I have been taking this medicine for 2 months now, i hate i feel like i don’t need it. my doctor just wants to push meds on me with out really listen to my needs. sometimes when i forget to take it i feel really sick and that makes me scared. am i addicted to this medicine? is it gonna lead to me taking more things? i don’t want to become one of those people that need pills every day to make it through the day not saying that any thing is wrong with them but my mother is a drug user so i am deathly afraid of being addicted to any thing some one please help me i just want to get off this stuff. i wish i never started it.
A: No, you aren’t addicted to Effexor. (I’ve taken it myself.)
Do not cut Effexor tablets in half unless your physician says to. Some medications are enteric-coated, which protects your stomach from them and allows them to be absorbed in the intestines and used more efficiently by your body.
Do not stop Effexor cold turkey. This can interfere with your brain’s neurotransmitter imbalance and make you irritated, anxious, nauseated, fatigued, headachy, and confused. The only time you should immediately stop a medication is when you have severe adverse effects.
You must wean yourself off Effexor, and this is best done with a physician’s supervision over a period of at least 2 weeks. This may be helpful in understanding it http://www.ehow.com/how_2203744_get-off-effexor.html.
Many physicians have the knee-jerk reflex of automatically prescribing antidepressants for “sad” patients, sort of like automatically prescribing antibiotics for an infection. The issue with antidepressants is that everyone reacts differently to different antidepressants, and they can sometimes make the patient feel even worse.
Tell your physician you want to wean off Effexor and then go medication-free for three months to see how you feel without medication. You can tell him/her that you will return immediately if you begin feeling depressed again. This will reassure the physician that you are rational and can recognize any warning signs of depression and will seek help if they occur.
As you say your mother is a drug user, it may be helpful for you to do “talk therapy” or cognitive therapy to help you cope with this family situation.
Q: Any time I miss my anti-anxiety medicine Effexor XR for more then two days I feel sick as a dog.?
I get nauseated, diahreah, pissed off and yelling, dizzy, headache, -All around don’t feel good at all. I don’t know what to do, obviously I need to take my medicine everyday, BUT if it makes me feel like this maybe I should ween myself off of it?? By the time I realize I haven’t taken it I’ve already made a complete A** of myself. At the time I don’t know WHAT”S wrong, I just feel like EVERYTHING is wrong. I end up fighting with my husband, yelling at my dogs, and generally acting like an idiot. Any one know what’s going on , or have you experienced this before??
A: You have discontinuation syndrome. I’ve had it from Effexor. Effexor clears out of your body very fast, and it’s kind of a shock to your brain when you don’t take it. This can be prevented by slowly tapering off Effexor or by taking a few doses of Prozac after you stop Effexor. Prozac slowly moves out of the body and doesn’t shock your brain as much.
Q: What is a good medicine for OCD to combine with Effexor XR?
I take 150 mg Effexor XR for anxiety depression. Depression is all gone!
Some Anxiety can still exist… so I take valium as needed before any anxiety inducing episode.
So…both of those are taken care of…but I have and have always had…extreme OCD-ritualistic thoughts and patterns which are driving me bananas……so does anyone know of a safe medicine for OCD to take with the other medications I take?…..any suggestions would be nice!
A: Same medications (SSRIs like Prozac, Luvox, and Zoloft, SNRIs like Effexor, or Tricyclic antidepressants like clomipramine) are used to treat OCD, but higher than typical antidepressant doses are usually necessary. Discuss with your psychiatrist on how to maximize the Effexor XR dose may be up to 300mg daily. You may not have to take a combination if your symptoms are controlled by a relatively high dose of one medication.
The only issue is your anxiety which may get worse if the dose is increased too quickly. So you psychiatrist will have to be cautious.
In addition, psychotherapy is likely to help (in combination with the medications).
Q: Is there anything I can take to counteract the sexual side effects of the antidepressant effexor?
I should be taking my effexor for depression but haven’t taken it in quite sometime due to the problems of having regular orgasms. This is one of the side effects of effexor, although I believe it’s a GREAT medicine to treat depression. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
A: Ask your doctor it is not unusual for them. Usually they will prescribe another med to counteract the side effect of the Effexor. I was on Zoloft and had the same side effect so they put me on Wellbutrin which is another anti-depressant to cancel out the effect. It worked great! So just ask your doctor there may be something they can give you to counteract it.
Q: Is it possible for a anxiety medicine to work too well?
I am on effexor 150 mg, my doctor increase the dosage from 75mg 2 weeks ago. At first, I felt less anxiety about myself and about talking to people. Yet now, I feel so apathetic. I am even apathetic as I type this. I don’t care about talking to people and I don’t care about my school work. I don’t feel motivated to complete anything or cook or clean.
But I don’t know if this is because I might be depressed and don’t know it. Isn’t effexor a depression drug too? If I were depressed, wouldn’t the medicine be helping?
I might feel depressed because I am away from my boyfriend of 2.5 years. I will be away from him for another 2 years because we are going to separate colleges. I am also in a city that is dangerous to be outside at night in and I have no friends here.
But I don’t care.
I am sooooooooo confused…
Is effexor working too well? Should I go back down to 75mg?
A: Effexor IS an anti-depressant! Sounds like you just aren’t getting to the bottom of your problems. The medicines are only to be used for short term. Only you can get yourself better, medicines only get you feeling okay for a little while. If you talk to your Doctor about CBT Therapy and see a therapist to work on those real issues, you will be fine. and you won’t need the medication. However, you MUST be willing to make the difficult changes in your thinking and behaviors. Simple? Yes! Easy? No!(This does include abstaining from drugs and alcohol)
Remember this! You are not the only person who has ever felt like this. There are many of us who have gone/going through the same as what you wrote. I can say this for myself. I lived through it, and I no longer need medication. I had a difficult time changing at how I look at life, but I did it. Took me 20 years and I pray it doesn’t take you that long.
Talk to your doc about cutting back and getting into CBT therapy.
Q: Why do I only sleep four or five hours a night, I take ambien cr. can another medicine that I take cause this
I am currently on the medicine effexor xr, can this cause me to only sleep four or five hours a night even while I am taking ambien cr?
A: how long have you been on Efexor XR coz if its been less then three weeks then you will just have to wait and see if your sleep improves. However if its been more than that period then i guess your doctor needs to adjust the dose of your Efexor XR (increase it). However let me remind you that for some people sleeping for about five hours a day is normal pattern. Secondly sometimes people who basically have a Bipolar disorder instead of unipolar depression, end up with a manic phase while on Efexor. The manic phase is also characterised initially by a decreased duration and need for sleep. Good luck.
