Q: Need Info olanzapine Drug?
olanzapine Drug is used for psychiatric illness. Is olanzapine will affect diabetes patient? how they effect?
A: Olanzapine is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions). It is also used to treat bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods). Olanzapine is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.
Before taking olanzapine, if you or anyone in your family has or has ever had diabetes.
* You should know that you may experience hyperglycemia (increases in your blood sugar) while you are taking this medication, even if you do not already have diabetes. If you have schizophrenia, you are more likely to develop diabetes than people who do not have schizophrenia, and taking olanzapine or similar medications may increase this risk. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms while you are taking olanzapine: extreme thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, blurred vision, or weakness. It is very important to call your doctor as soon as you have any of these symptoms, because high blood sugar can cause a serious condition called ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis may become life-threatening if it is not treated at an early stage. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include: dry mouth, nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity, and decreased consciousness.

Q: I am trying to find an expert in the side effects of the antipsychotic drug OLANZAPINE,if anyone can help?
A: An expert would be your local Pharmacist.
Q: Is there any other drug like OLANZAPINE that doesnt have the hunger side effect?
A: There are many, many anti-psychotic drugs. All of them have side effects, but different drugs have different side effects for different people. A drug that makes you very hungry might make me very sleepy, instead.
Talk to your health care provider, and explain to him or her that the drug you have been given is giving you problems with the side effects, and ask if you can try another drug in that class. Sometimes it take a while to find the drug which works best for a person, and which has the least offensive or difficult side effects.
Q: How would long-term Olanzapine (Zyprexa) usage affect someone if they didn’t need the drug in the first place?
A: Allright Cyril, why wouldn’t you want to take it? I did some reading online and saw the most prominent known side affect appears to be a risk of developing diabetes and weight gain. I think though, if you have schizophrenia or extreme bipolar, the benefits would outweigh the risks(no pun intended).
I know it is a very difficult decision to take drugs like that, drugs that either effect intake or suppression of receptors and chemicals in our brains. I have to take Kepra, and I hate to really. I am not certain that what I have is seizures, but like I said, the benefits outweigh the risks. I don’t want to drop my children, or have an accident in my car because I did not take the medicine.
That is the best question I think to ask yourself.
Will your diagnosis adversly affect or harm you or someone else if you choose not to take the drugs you are prescribed?
And if your choice is that you should take the medication, then I think you should try very hard to not overthink your decision, put all the side effects out of your mind and move forward with your life. That is the most important thing. I hope you have peace of mind about this difficult decision. Good Luck friend, and God Bless
Q: Anyone on a low dose of olanzapine? ie 5mg at night,i have heard so much about this drug and weight gain,i hav?
Have been put on it a week ago to help with sleep and my mood, although i have missed two doses already(as i had to be up so un usually early v worried i wouldn’t wake) im really worried about the weight gain…..this drug has such negative stories….my doctors and social worker say at this low dose if i stick to healthy food i will be ok …the first few days all i thought about was food ,but it could have all been in my mind! also i have felt Pretty hung over the next day, is this my body just getting used to the drug? any thoughts of people taking it would be interesting thanks
PS i have borderline personality disorder, i am on anti depressants and another mood stabiliser ,ive had therapy ,and im awaiting more thank you
A: Hi Splash,
I dont think you need to worry about weight gain, on such a small dose, my partner has been on this drug for several years, he,s on a higher dose,,20mg, he has put a little weight on, but only the weight he had lost from being so ill with the depressive side of bipolar, so he was underweight, but he,s now at normal weight, he has days when he eats like a horse, but we both think that is down to boredom, due to other days were he just has a normal healthy apetite, so providing you stick to a normal diet you should be alright. i think the reason some people put on weight is due to the depression side, as lack of energy & motivation, stops them being able to do what they,d normally do.
As for you not taking the tablets when you,ve got to be up early, i would,nt do that, once again my partner, never has trouble waking up to the alarm in the morning, if anything he has trouble getting to sleep, even with sleeping tablets as well.
Your feeling of being hungover, when you started them, i would of thought its your body getting used to the tablets, however if you still feel this way in a week or 2, have a word with the doctor who prescribed them, it might be a case, of your just not getting on with them, for which the Doctor, if he/she thinks is necessary will try you on something else, but i think give it another couple of days, and the hungover effect will wear off.
Anyway Splash, hope this advice has helped you, and that everything gets back to normal soon.
By the way, on writing this advice to you, i did check everything out with my partner, and we are agreed on what we have advised you.
Good Luck.
Q: is there a drug that works similarly to symbyax for the treatment of bipolar disorder?
symbyax is a combination of fluoxetine (prozac) and olanzapine (zyprexa) that works wonders but has the unfortunate side effect of inducing significant weight gain (that’s the zyprexa), a prohibitive factor in those already overweight for whom it represents a serious medical concern in it’s own right. does anyone know of a similarly-acting med that is weight neutral? the prozac by itself does not help. thanks!
A: Zyprexa is one of the most weight gaining drugs you can take.
You should ask your doctor if you can try a different antipsychotic.
You should keep taking the prozac to stop you having a bad depressive episode.
Q: Is Olanzapine generic for Zyprexia or is Zyprexia a generic for Olanzapine? Zyprexia is quite expensive..?
Zyprexia has been prescribed for my Father who has dementia. I have asked to have him put on a generic of this drug and I have been told there are no generics???
A: From what I can find olanzapine is the generic for Zyprexa, but it’s not available as a generic yet because the Zyprexa patent doesn’t run out until 2011.

A: Olanzapine (Zyprexa) is an atypical antipsychotic that is used to control the manic phase of bipolar disorder.
Often it would be presecribed along with a mood stabiliser such as valproate or lithium.
15mg is quite a high starting dose – in order to minimise side effects you could start at a lower dose (say 5mg) and then build up over a few days or so to the full dose.
It will probably make you very sleepy (especially until you are used to it) and it is known to cause weight gain. I think while you are taking it you will need to have regular bloodtests, to check for things like diabetes.
It should make you feel much calmer than you do now; stop the racing thoughts and help with your insomnia.
It is very common with bipolar to take some time to find the drug or combination of drugs that works for you, so don’t be surprised if you don’t feel any benefit if your doctor tries you on something else, and then something else, and so on until he finds what works for you.
You can track your mood online at https://www.moodtracker.com/ (and then print it out) or you can download a paper mood chart to fill in from http://www.healthyplace.com/bipolar-disorder/diagnosis/bipolar-mood-chart/menu-id-67/
If you do this and then take it along to your doctor he can see straight away if things are improving or not.

Q: Zyprexa (olanzapine). My husband has bi polar mood disorder. Has been on lithium.?
My husband has been on lithium for years. He now has hyperthyroidism. Consequently he is being weaned of lithium and commenced on Olanzapine 5mg nocte. Is this the correct drug for his disease? Our GP is a nice guy but admits to not much knowledge in that department. Thankyou for any ideas!
A: Zyprexa is a great medication for bipolar disorder but it has some poor side effects. The biggest one is it can cause a lot of weight gain. Somehow the medication changes how your body metabalizes food, so even if you eat the same, you will still gain weight. It can also cause you to feel hungry all the time, which in turn leads to weight gain. If you are unsure about this, you need to have your husband referred to a psychiatrists. GPs are pretty good, but their knowledge is limited and general compared to a psychiatrist. Good luck with this!
Q: olanzapine (Zyprexa) have you had any side affects?

A: i suffer from bi polar (manic depression) so know how you fell, ive tried 80% of meds on the market and zyprexa is one of them, it will make you drowsy, sometimes a little nausous, i had a headache for a while but apart from that you will probs be ok. need anyome advice let me know

Q: drug urinalysis?
Does Zyprexa/Olanzapine show up as anything in a random drug urinalysis?
A: on most spot dot. no. test usually want to check for thc(marijuana), cocaine and narcotics(vicodin, oxycodone, hydromorphine). more expensive test also show for anphetamines, mdma(ecstacy) and lsd(acid).
Q: Amisulpride and olanzapine. Are they safe?
I have been on amisulpride for over a week now, whilst cutting down a large dose of olanzapine. I am expeirencing bouts of destructive thoughts and thay are very disturbing. Does anyone know if the combination of these drugs are dangerous? Thanks!
A: If a doctor has knowingly prescribed both of these drugs to you and is aware of the over-lap, then it will be safe to take them. No decent doctor will prescribe a dangerous combination of medication.
The destructive thoughts you are experiencing could just be because you’ve cut down on the Olazapine and the Amisulpride isn’t working to it’s full effect yet. So essentially you’ve been left with no significant amount of medication that you need in your system at the moment which is likely to lead to your symptoms coming back.
If you have any concerns, make an appointment with your doctor or speak to a pharmacist.
