Q: What does the antipsychotic medication Olanzapine taste like when administered as the dissolving wafer Zydis?

A: When I had the dissolving Olanzapine, they had an orangey taste, which wasn’t too bad to take.

Q: Do you find olanzapine or other antipsychotic medication blocks your dreams and imagination and creativity?
Bren – I am taking it for schizophrenia

A: Hi, I know folks do find that with olanzepine and other meds – I was allergic to olanzepine so couldn’t take it for long but I found risperidone dulled me down a lot but I think part of that is the illnesses in themselves (I have bipolar with psychosis), however, as time goes on and I have become more stable then life has returned – I now take abilify and am even doing a part-time degree. All the best to you

Q: Does olanzapine conflict with anti-depressant medication?
i read that olanzapine blocks the dopamine (D2) receptor and serotonin (5HT2A) receptor. Anti-depressants are made to increase serotonin. If olanzapine blocks the serotonin receptor, won’t that counter the anti-depressant ?

A: No it doesn’t, this drug is used all the time in combination with antidepressants that manipulate serotonin without any problems. Another product that is made by the company that makes olanzapine is a drug called SYMBYAX, which is not a unique drug itself, but is a mixture of prozac and olanzapine together in one pill that is usually used for mood disorders and it holds approval from the Food and Drug Administration in the United States specifically for treating depression associated with bipolar disorder. Olanzapine is a wonderful drug, been on it myself, and there are a whole lot of people who are willing to deal with insignificant and superficial side effects like weight in exchange in exchange for giving them the chance to have a life. I know all the risks–weight gain, diabetes and all that–and I wouldn’t hesitate to take it again which I do when I get too manic to deal with.

Q: im on the antipsychotic medication olanzapine, anyone know any better drug or is this the best one?

A: Everyone responds differently to different drugs. Talk to your doctor if you feel it isn’t working for you. What may be better for someone else could be worse for you.

Q: Why has my medication stopped working? Zyprexa (Olanzapine)?
I have been diagnosed with drug induced psychosis a little over a month ago, I was started on 5mg of Zyprexa, moved up to 7.5 then 10 and last night took 12.5 because my psychosis was coming back.

I want to know why it is coming back to me, because of a tolerance to the medication or is my condition worsening? Or is there another reason?

I have quit smoking hoping it was the cigaretes which have stopped it working but I doubt that because I have been smoking the whole time I have been on them and it only got bad now.

A: I dont think smoking would affect it but your probably right about the tolerance thing. Sometimes they just quit working even if the dosage is increased. Maybe you should switch to something else more potent.

Q: What is wrong with this medication my shrink prescribed?
How shortly do I acknowledge a difference in my behavior, sleeping and eating following the usage of ZYPREXA (Olanzapine)?
I have been using the medicine for three nights however I feel no different.
The ZYPREXA is 10mg per tablet.
On the third night I prepared applying the medication with vodka & Zoplicone (Sleeping pill). This is the only method I respond. Therefore I manage to sleep by combining the medication with vodka and sleeping tablets.

A: What are you taking it for? Is it making you manic? Is that why you can’t sleep?

It takes Zyprexa about a week to reach a steady state. But if you’re having issues sleeping, you may need a different sleeping aid. Call your doc.

Q: Whats da side effects for olanzapine?
Olanzapine is medication taken for treating mental illness like schizo.

Q: What causes the weight gain in Olanzapine/psiquiatric medications?
Hello I would like to know what causes the weight gain in Olanzapine/psiquiatric medications.
Exactly what component does that. It because I was prescripted this medication, and I gaiin weight and I liked it, but I had to left it because the other dangerous adverse effects but I would like to increase my weight and not by the start a diet way, because it doesnt works for me neither other specific hunger inductors or what ever. So I want to know here in my country maybe a pharmacist would prepare the thing for me.

A: Zyprexa (Olanzapine) can’t be “prepared” in such a way that you stop gaining weight. It’s a manufactured pill.

It’s no “component” of the drug causing weight gain, and certainly not any one that research shows this is why you gain weight. What people often misunderstand is that when a drug gets approval and the Physician’s Desk Reference tells you about the drug, when they explain the mechanism by which a drug works a) they don’t always know this is why the drug “works,” and b) just because a drug is supposed to target specific neurotransmitters it does NOT mean these are the only neurotransmitters affected. Hence, I might give you a drug that does something to dopamine levels but in changing dopamine levels your serotonin levels may change too. Neurotransmitters and hormones regulate other neurotransmitters and hormones. It may be that in messing with the levels of one neurotransmitter your body’s “set point” for body weight gets altered, and it’s likely an indirect effect of whatever the drug’s chemical structure is.

Q: are there any sadative anti psycotic medication that ?
I can take instead of olanzapine, as olanzapine causes too much weight gain.

A: Seroquel is very good for helping people sleep at night. I hope you and your doctor will come up with something that works well for you. Best Wishes.

Q: Has anyone taken zyprexa(olanzapine)? Need some advice please! How did you feel when taking this medication?
So my psychiatrist has put me on zyprexa. I have severe social anxiety and panic attacks. I have been on it fot a week now and it is giving really bad headaches, making me real dizzy, and I’m constantly tires I do want to do anything but just lay down and sleep. I can’t think straight because it is like my brain is frozen and because of the headaches. I don’t feel like taking this anymore. I have been on other meds before this one. I want to say something to my dr, but he will prob say I didn’t try this med long enough, or think I’m faking it. I Can’t stand this feeling anymore. I’m almost for sure gonna fet off of it. I need some advice. can you tell me ur experience with this med. Thanks.
I’m on 2.5 mgs and weigh 130 lbs

A: Zyprexa is an antipsychotic medication sometimes used as a mood stabilizer. It does have a tranquilizing effect, like all antipsychotics, so the fatigue is likely an effect from the drug. Weight gain is a problem for antipsychotics, so it is a possible side effect, but most people don’t have that problem. If you think Zyprexa is causing you trouble, talk with your doctor about it. If the doctor blows you off, you can always get a second opinion from a different psychiatrist. You should be able to talk openly about your meds with your psychiatrist- if you can’t, there’s a problem.

If you are struggling with panic and social anxiety, are you seeing a counselor or psychologist? Medications are not the only form of treatment available, and it sounds like meds aren’t working out real well for you. Counseling can be effective in treating anxiety and panic related problems. Just remember that counselors are a dime a dozen, but good ones can be hard to find. A PhD/PsyD level psychologist might be a better way to go than master’s level therapists if you’ve had bad experiences before.

Q: I am planning on traveling to India and need to know if my prescription medication is available there?
and what it is likely to cost. 1/ Miztazapine tablets 45mg 2/ Acamprosate tablets 333mg 3/ olanzapine tablets 20mg 4/ thiamine tablets 100mg 5/ omeprazole gastro-resistant capsules 20mg. Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

A: India has a quite modern healthcare system, which means that most western medications are available – although potentially not under the brand name you might be used to. For medication that you use regularly, find out the active ingredients as this will help the pharmacist locate exactly what you need.

Pharmacists in towns and cities generally have a reasonable level of English and can provide basic medical advice, and recommend over-the-counter-medication. However a visit to the doctor is usually very low-cost, can be arranged through your hotel or guesthouse and will ensure that you get the correct medication. Doctors in tourist areas also seem to be very adept at assisting tourists with some of the more common ‘adjustment’ issues such as stomach problems.

Always check seals and the expiry date on any medication given to you and before you leave it’s worth having a chat to your doctor/pharmacist and checking if your medication will need to be stored in the fridge as some drugs behave differently in warmer climes. You may also need the dose adjusting to compensate and should be able to check the generic names of any drugs you use as they might be called another name if they are only available from an alternative manufacturer. If in doubt, take a supply with you from home and make sure you have a doctors letter for any prescriptions that might be treated differently legally to show customs if need be.

Q: are there any anti-psychotic medication that does not make you gain weight?
I am currently on olanzapine (zyprexa) and it has made me gain over two stone in weight. I have gone from a size 8 to a size 14 (UK) in a matter of months. Are there any anti-psychotics that does not include weight gain?

A: They are all different for each person. I gained a lot of weight on Abilify, had a little hunger on Saphris but managed to keep my weight down, did not have any weight gain on Geodon….. Most people gain a little on Geodon but do not gain on Abilify….. everyone is different, you never know until you try one.

Q: why do i need to have my heart and blood monitored on the medication they want to put me on?
ive been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and they want to put me on medication cant remember the name but it might be olanzapine something like that. and my doctor said that i would need to go for hcgs to monitor my heart and they needed to keep a eye on my blood why would they make me go all threw this if i only have a personality disorder it makes no sense and i feel like a Guineaa pig.
sorry i mean ecg

A: Olanzapine can cause low blood pressure which is why they want to monitor your blood pressure. I have no idea what a hcgs is, so I’ll assume you mean an ECG/EKG? I can’t understand why you’d need an ECG though, unless you overdosed.

Q: why do i need hcgs and my blood monitored on the medication they want to put me on?
ive been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and they want to put me on medication cant remember the name but it might be olanzapine something like that. and my doctor said that i would need to go for hcgs to monitor my heart and they needed to keep a eye on my blood why would they make me go all threw this if i only have a personality disorder it makes no sense and i feel like a Guineaa pig.
they said i would have to do this regularly

A: they may want to do blood tests regularly to keep an eye on the level of the drug in your system alhtough not sure as when I was on that antipsychotic the only time it was done was when I was an inpatient. As for the testing on your heart, it would not be hcg for your heart (this is a hormone that is only present during pregnancy so it could be they want to make sure you aren’t pregnant while on the drug or that they meant some other monitoring of your heart – again it isn’t something I needed to be done at all. The only person who can tell you why your dr wants these tests done it by asking them.

Q: Cant peak during sex, on psychiatric medication?
I’m currently taking Olanzapine (Zyprexa) and Fluoxetine (prozac) for an undiagnosed mood disorder. I met a new girl recently and no matter how many times we have sex i just cant seem to cum, Ive tried multiple positions, all to no success. I was begging to think if it was to do with the medication im taking. Does anyone have experience with issues of a similar nature or are able to let me know if it could be my medication interfering. Thanks.

A: I have been taking fluoxetine for years now and have difficulty reaching orgasm. My sex drive is also very low.
