Q: Could the drug zyprexa cause a tortuous aorta?
My mom just died. I got the hospital records. On the CT scan of her heart and chest it was reported she had a tortuous aorta and enlarged heart. The neurosurgeon made some comments as to side effects of the use of the drug zyprexa which my mom had been on for several months. Could this be related
A: Zyprexa is used for the treatment of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and in some cases for generalized anxiety disorder. A tortuous or twisted aorta is a physical deformity of a major blood vessel. There are no known medications that can cause such a condition. The tortuous aorta can be a contributing factor to an enlarged heart. For more information on Zyprexa see the website below.
Q: Has anyone had experience with a child taking the drug zyprexa ?
I heard some bad things ang good things my stepson is 9 and is supposed to start it tomorrow. I don’t know if i should give it to him or not. Please help if you know anything about this drug in children.
A: Do not do it.
Zyprexa is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
If it’s prescribed to your son by Dr, ask the second opinion.
Good luck!
Q: will Depekote and zyprexa show up on a drug screen?
I have valid scripts but my employer doesnt know that I take these meds and I have a drug screen coming up.
A: Take your meds. with you because they will show up. It’s a drug test after all.
Q: I’m gaining weight on zyprexa, is there a drug to help me lose weight, that is covered by medicaid?
Serquil did the same thing. Zyprexa calms my racing thoughts, and brings my audio hallucinations down to a whisper.
A: O yes I know that non-stopping feeling of hunger and the gaining weight too. Until I changed medication.
But: I preferred being a bit fat than to have to go back to to what led to my taking Zyprexa in the first place I never suffered from hallucinations though .
Im’ afraid the only real answer is a diet, and a harsh one too.
The best of luck
Q: What are the drug interactions among Zyprexa, Olcadil, Mantidan and Wellbutrin?
A: There is a drug interactivity function, at www.drugs.com but with so many the chances of an interaction are high; see MEDICATIONS INTERACT – DANGERS OF MEDICATION INTERACTIVITY! in section 81, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris
Q: A drug called ZYPREXA,CAN IT BE POSSIBLE TO CAUSE BLINDNESS?
my develepmentally handicapped son was put on this drug because off his abuse to himself hitting banging his head and so forth.this was about 2 years ago now as off the early part off this month he is blind, apparetly his sight was already gone in his left eye and no one knows why.and they discovered he had a fully develeped cateract in his right eye surgury was done and something went wrong and he had 2 more surgurys but they tell me he is totally blind now. I am afraid now that that drug ZYPREXA MAY HAVE CAUSED IT ,DO YOU HAVE ANY ANSWERS FOR ME.Please
A: If you look at http://www.zyprexa.com and then look at the prescribing information (second link below), you can find the package insert (you can also get this from your pharmacist). It lists the following as adverse events that occured during clinical trials of Zyprexa:
“Special Senses — Frequent: conjunctivitis; Infrequent: abnormality of accommodation, blepharitis, cataract, deafness, diplopia, dry eyes, ear pain, eye hemorrhage, eye inflammation, eye pain, ocular muscle abnormality, taste perversion, and tinnitus; Rare: corneal lesion, glaucoma, keratoconjunctivitis, macular hypopigmentation, miosis, mydriasis, and pigment deposits lens.”
I assume your son is under the care of a psychiatrist? Your doctor should be aware of possible side effects and can answer more specific questions regarding your son’s condition and what may have lead to the cataract formation.
Q: doe’s anyone know about a drug called zyprexa? If so what is the proper dose for a female of 130 lbs.?
My daughter is being giving the medication and I feel that the dose amount is a bit large. However Iam not a doctor so I don’t know for sure.
A: It would depend on why you are being prescribed zyprexa. It can be used to treat a few different things so the dose would vary. If you are being prescribed this medication your doctor will tell you what dose to take and it will be on your prescription bottle. Good luck!
Q: Is the drug Seraquel addictive? What about other drugs in its class such as Geodon and Zyprexa? I am trying to
get off of clonazepam, and I am taking Seraquel to mask the horrible withdrawal symptoms from clonazepam. Is Serequel any more addictive that the average antidepressant, or is it just as addictive as clonazepam (!!!!!!)?
A: The withdrawals from Seraquel are pretty light. The side effects of Seraquel on the other hand are really really bad. I quit taking Seraquel just from the side effect. Zyprexa had pretty nasty withdrawal symptoms too and the side effects weren’t as bad as Seraquel though. The worst withdrawals for me were from Paxil.
As far as being addictive. Medicine isn’t generally regarded as addictive, though because they produce withdrawals they appear to have an additive quality. However, the definition of addiction is a little different.
Q: Has anyone heard of a lawsuit against Eli Lilly & Company over the drug Zyprexa®?
What have you heard?
A: Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) has agreed to pay nearly $700 million to settle a majority of legal claims that labels on its anti-psychosis drug Zyprexa had failed to provide adequate warning that the drug could put patients more at risk for developing diabetes.
Lilly said late Thursday {June 9th 2005} it had agreed in principle with plaintiffs’ attorneys involved in the Zyprexa claims. The settlement, when finalized, will resolve about 75 percent of the Zyprexa claims pending in the United States, according to a Lilly news release.
“While we believe the claims are without merit, we took this difficult step because we believe it is in the best interest of the company, the patients who depend on this medication, and their doctors,” Lilly Chairman and CEO Sidney Taurel said in the statement.
Most of the lawsuits claimed that before September 2003, the information on Zyprexa labels regarding the risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes was not adequately displayed. Hyperglycemia is a condition in which the blood has elevated sugar levels, typical in diabetics.
In September 2003, the Food and Drug Administration required label changes for all atypical anti-psychotic drugs to warn against the risk.
The Indianapolis-based company plans to establish the settlement fund, which will affect its second-quarter earnings. The company said it plans to take a pretax charge of at least $700 million for the fund and to cover other claims not in the agreement.
The agreement only involves people who filed claims arguing that they developed diabetes-related conditions from using Zyprexa, which is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Lilly said it is prepared to continue its “vigorous defense” of the drug in the remaining cases.
Christopher Seeger, a member of the plaintiffs’ steering committee, said the group was pleased with the agreement.
“The patient population to which this drug is given has difficult medical histories,” Seeger said. “Protracted litigation was in no one’s interest.”
In April, Lilly said worldwide sales of Zyprexa fell 5 percent to $1.04 billion. Sales in the United States fell 17 percent to $517.4 million because competing drugs are reducing demand for Zyprexa, the company said. U.S. sales of the treatment for schizophrenia and other disorders brought in $2.4 billion for Lilly last year. The drug had worldwide sales of $4.4 billion in 2004.
However, Lilly prevented further erosion of the still lucrative U.S. franchise for the drug when a federal judge in April upheld its patent giving its exclusive U.S. rights until 2011. The case could still face appeals.
Q: does anyone know a date that the zyprexa lawsuit will be issuing checks to the victims?
There was a class action lawsuit filed against Eli Lilly Pharnaceuticals because of health problems caused by the drug zyprexa. Anyway, back in the beginning of Novemeber I recieved an envelope with some documents I had to sign and send back to the law firm (whick I did) and the paper also had the dollar amount to be paid to me…s18,000. Anyways, does anyone know when the settlement checks might be issued to participants in this settlement. THANKS

Q: I really want to go go off of my Zyprexa to another anti psychotic drug….?
Are there any anti pyschotics that dont cause weight gain?
A: abilify is supposed to have few such side effects.
Q: Why do you think that the drug industry was gone unchecked for so long?
With killers like Vioxx and other drugs, such as Zyprexa causing diabetes, why do you think that the FDA has chosen to let such dangerous drugs onto the market?
Also, why do you think that certain drug companies decided to choose higher profit margins, even when it meant that people had to die or become seriously injured as a result?
A: lots of money to buy political influence
It is the greatest wickedness that certain herbal remedies have been banned in the EU in the name of standardisation and “safety”, when they have been used for decades without harmful effects
Q: Is Zyprexa only for people with hallucinations/schizophrenia?
Hello. A year ago I started having these horrible symptoms: extremely depressed, thoughts of harming myself and others, feeling of getting crazy, etc. I seeked professional help…the doctor diagnose was that I had Depression. He prescribed Cymbalta and Zyprexa, the symptoms went away. My question is….Why did the doctor say that I had Depression and he prescribed Zyprexa (antipsychotic drug) usually used for hallucinations? Did I have something else? Maybe the doctor did not tell me the whole diagnose for me not to get worried or scared?. How will Zyprexa withdrawal be? I am going to get these horrible thoughts again when I stop Zyprexa. Please help
A: Zyprexa is a drug that is frequently used as a maintenance drug for bipolar disorder as well as psychotic symptoms. It helps improve symptoms such as sleep disturbances, irritability, racing thoughts, and anxiety. If the meds are working, you shouldn’t stop them. It’s not recommended that you suddenly stop Zyprexa. If you have concerns about this, talk to the physician who diagnosed and prescribed them for you. It will help you understand the reasoning behind the prescriptions and ease your mind. If the physician agrees that you should stop Zyprexa, it will be slowly decreased before it’s stopped. But talk to your physician.
Q: Which drug is a better treatment for those with Schizophrenia? Clozapine or Zyprexa?
A: IMHO zyprexa only served to turn me into a brain dead obese zombie …….. it did nothing to help the unbelievable brain frizz, gorish nightmares, total paranoia, hearing voices, thinking everybody was out to get me and constantly talking about me, digestive troubles, migraines and headaches, constipation, total exhaustion and fatigue …….. i doubled my weight in 3 short months on that sheet ……….. paradoxically, it only served to make me 20 times worse ……. and as an added bonus i was in agonising daily pain from all the extra weight ……. they never tried me on Clozapine ……. blessed be …… i had an epiphany ……. that i’d never felt worse in my life and went looking for natural alternatives ……. nearly drowned in the bottom of a bottle before i went off the Zyprexa though cos the abject depression was so terrifying …….. eventually i was correctly diagnosed with coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, severe intolerances to both processed sugar and soy and eggs …….. it’s nothing short of miraculous the difference in the way my mind works, my energy levels, my perspective, my health since i sifted through all those intolerances and weaned myself off all the toxicsludge processed sugar, packaged food, meds, sodas, pop and soft drinks, caffeine, alcohol i was consuming …… but yeah, that was me …….. maybe you’re different ……….. if anybody i knew and loved ever got a diagnosis of Schizophrenia i would convince them to get tested for food and chemical intolerances before they succumbed to the slippery dip of heavy antipsychotics.
peace baby

Q: Have any of you ever used zyprexa to help you quit smoking? Did it work, and what were the side effects?
My partner is a heavily addicted smoker who tried patches unsuccessfully. His doctor has now put him on zyprexa. I understand the history of the drug, and how it is supposed to work. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has used it for this reason.
Oh dammit, it is Zyban. Gosh, slight difference, stupid me. Yes, Zyban – just checked the packet. Apologies to those who i have confused!
He is starting to flip out on the zyban. Blurred vision, headaches, dizziness etc. Is this chantix drug available in australia??
A: If he is having such a multitude of symptoms on the zyban he should stop taking it and call his doctor. As far as I know, studies still point to quitting “cold turkey” as the most effective means of quitting long term.
